{"id":2626,"date":"2011-05-02T04:06:07","date_gmt":"2011-05-02T08:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=2626"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:11:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:11:09","slug":"agriculture-faculty-and-students-receive-research-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/agriculture-faculty-and-students-receive-research-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Agriculture faculty and students receive research awards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday, May 2, 2011<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/image001991.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2627\" width=\"174\" height=\"204\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PRINCESS ANNE, MD &#8211; (April 20, 2011)Several University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) researchers are recipients of awards won at the 16<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;biennial research symposium of the Association of Research Directors held in Atlanta, Ga., earlier this month.&nbsp; Dr. Anugrah Shaw, Xavier Henry and Mark Gooden were recognized among some 700 faculty, staff, researchers and students representing the 1890 Land-Grant Universities (17) and Tuskegee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guided by the theme, &#8220;1890 Research: Sustainable Solutions for Current and Emerging Issues,&#8221; more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students competed for recognition in&nbsp;oral&nbsp;and poster competitions.&nbsp; Faculty presentations were non-competitive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Xavier Henry, a professional pilot via the UMES Aviation Sciences program and a graduate student specializing in food and agricultural science, won first place out of 26\u00a0in the graduate oral presentation.\u00a0 A part of the Sustainable\u00a0Plant and Animal Production Systems category, his research is titled &#8220;Using Variable Rate Seeding to Maximize Corn Yield and Profit on a Field with Management Zones.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark Gooden, a doctoral student in the Food Science and Technology Ph.D. Program, placed third in the graduate poster presentation\u00a0 for\u00a0Sustainable Plant and Animal Production Systems.\u00a0 His research is titled &#8220;Effect of Garlic and Papaya Seed on Fecal Egg Counts in Sheep and Goats.&#8221;\u00a0 Gooden returned to the university after earning a Master of Science degree in poultry science in 1996.\u00a0 Prior to returning to the university, he taught in an agricultural college in Jamaica.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"231\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/image00198.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2628\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Anugrah Shaw, professor and textile technologist in the Department of Human Ecology, is internationally-known for her extensive research in protective clothing for pesticide applicators.\u00a0 Spanning more than two decades, her studies are the basis of\u00a0a\u00a0comprehensive database that includes\u00a0more than 130 fabrics that were evaluated at UMES.\u00a0 She has worked to help establish the standardization of test methods, the development of performance specifications, and studies related to the development and\u00a0evaluation of personal protective equipment for hot climates.
