{"id":2418,"date":"2020-06-30T01:53:50","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T05:53:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=2418"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:15:35","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:15:35","slug":"why-is-that-goat-sitting-on-dr-braxtons-desk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/why-is-that-goat-sitting-on-dr-braxtons-desk\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is that goat sitting on Dr. Braxton\u2019s desk?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UMES\u2019 resident veterinarian goes virtual with summer recruiting<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Stephanie-and-Kim-Braxton-2007-alumnae.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2420\" width=\"354\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Stephanie-and-Kim-Braxton-2007-alumnae.jpg 375w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Stephanie-and-Kim-Braxton-2007-alumnae-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 354px) 100vw, 354px\" \/><figcaption>    <strong>Stephanie Braxton, left, her sister Kimberly<\/strong><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COVID-19 put the kibosh on Kimberly Braxton&#8217;s summer plans to provide local teens with an insider&#8217;s perspective on academic paths available to those considering a career caring for animals, large and small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, UMES&#8217; resident veterinarian found another outlet to channel her passion for recruiting students she hopes might follow in her footsteps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Braxton accepted an invitation from Dr. Kristin Sampson, a friend and colleague, to serve as a guest presenter for a virtual &#8220;vet medicine intro to internship&#8221; course offered through a summer program called STEM Career Prep.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was able to host my sessions from my office in Trigg Hall and include interactive activities and live visits from some of the younger UMES farm animals,\u201d Braxton said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sampson is a former middle school principal whose research inspired her to focus \u201con providing equitable education to African American students and other students of color\u201d in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants in the summer STEM Career Prep program were primarily from the Washington and Baltimore areas, locales where UMES traditionally does well attracting undergraduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sampson needed compelling content with \u201cattention to detail to captivate our students, and distinguish our offering from the challenging virtual learning they just completed for the 2019-20 school year.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDr. Braxton exceeded all expectations by presenting a thoughtful and inspiring, live virtual presentation to 6<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;(through) 10<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;grade students,\u201d Sampson said.&nbsp; \u201cShe used various media platforms &#8211; including video, still slides, polls and photos &#8211; to communicate with our students who greatly benefited from her expert knowledge of vet medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"425\" height=\"243\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Kimberly-Braxton-grab-bags-2020.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Kimberly-Braxton-grab-bags-2020.jpg 425w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Kimberly-Braxton-grab-bags-2020-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Dr. Braxton&#8217;s virtual &#8220;vet med&#8221; recruiting props<\/strong><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like many educators, Braxton found herself this past spring re-calibrating lectures and lessons and saw the \u201cvirtual vet camp\u201d as an opportunity to fine-tune those skills some predict will take on greater importance in delivery of distance education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt&#8217;s hard to make a connection<\/strong>&nbsp;online with veterinarian medicine. Hearing, feeling, touching animals is important\u201d because they obviously can&#8217;t speak, Braxton said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love my students here,\u201d she said.&nbsp; \u201cYou just see them light up when they come in contact with animals.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During her two sessions, Braxton tried \u201cto replicate that as much as I could\u201d using interactive anatomy models, including an artificial dog&#8217;s leg to drawn blood from as well as live domestic pets and a kid, or baby goat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the summer program participants didn&#8217;t see was the person operating the camera looked just like the one in front of it.&nbsp; Braxton&#8217;s twin sister, Stephanie. volunteered to help with the technology and camera.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both are 2007 UMES alumnae.&nbsp; Kimberly earned a bachelor&#8217;s degree in agriculture \/animal science with a pre-veterinarian concentration and went on to Purdue University to become a veterinarian.&nbsp; Stephanie&#8217;s UMES degree is in criminal justice and she also holds a master&#8217;s degree in cyber-security policy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sampson said, \u201cDr. Braxton exposed our students to the daily tasks of vets, college course trajectory, study abroad opportunities in vet medicine, and diversity statistics.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some two dozen students signed up for her second session, including two from North Carolina.&nbsp; Braxton even created two options for independent projects for students who wanted to take participation a step further.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are so thankful she took the time out of her busy schedule to volunteer to such a worthy cause &#8211; STEM career preparation and exposure to minority students,\u201d Sampson said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES&#8217; admission office pitched in by helping assemble a \u201cgrab bag\u201d of items like stuffed animals and recruiting material Braxton sent to each participant in her sessions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As a veterinarian I have met many individuals with a passion for animals,\u201d she said.&nbsp; \u201cAs a college-level educator, this is what motivates me to inspire students to turn that passion into a career.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UMES\u2019 resident veterinarian goes virtual with summer recruiting COVID-19 put the kibosh on Kimberly Braxton&#8217;s summer plans to provide local teens with an insider&#8217;s perspective on academic paths available to those considering a career caring for animals, large and small.
