{"id":2329,"date":"2020-08-27T14:06:45","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T18:06:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=2329"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:16:59","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:16:59","slug":"umes-expands-health-professions-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/umes-expands-health-professions-training\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES expands health professions training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"375\" height=\"461\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Maresha-Carrie-Irving-Tx.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Maresha-Carrie-Irving-Tx.jpeg 375w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Maresha-Carrie-Irving-Tx-244x300.jpeg 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption><strong>PA student Maresha Carrie of Irving Tx.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charter class of physician assistant graduate students enrolls<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday, August 27, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a nation transfixed by a pandemic that&#8217;s disrupted every aspect of life, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore welcomed a charter class this fall to its new graduate-level&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/pa\/\"><strong>physician assistant program<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seventeen students &#8211; including four from Maryland and two from Delaware &#8211; will spend the next three years pursuing credentials that will prepare them for the front lines of healthcare at a critical time in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI witnessed issues within my community, alarmingly more so among the youth aging from 12-21, which compelled me to research and observe these difficulties in our community that warrant help,&#8221;&nbsp;Maresha Carrie of Irving, Texas said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I have volunteered with &#8216;at risk&#8217; youth who suffered from mental health issues, from being raped, verbally abused, beaten, harassed, wrongfully stereotyped, and accused,&#8221; Carrie said. &#8220;I want to be someone that these types of individuals can trust as well as be an example for those who need to know that anything is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as the university transitioned mid-spring to online instruction, the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant announced in March UMES had met standards to start training the next generation of medical professionals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physician assistants \u201cdiagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient&#8217;s principal healthcare provider,\u201d according to the American Academy of PAs.\u00a0 \u201cWith thousands of hours of medical training, PAs are versatile and collaborative\u201d \u2026 and \u201cpractice \u2026 in every medical setting and specialty, improving healthcare access and quality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Hospital-execs.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2331\" width=\"579\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Hospital-execs.jpeg 812w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Hospital-execs-300x245.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Hospital-execs-768x626.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leading UMES&#8217; program is Dr. Tiffany S. Maxwell, who has recruited a half-dozen colleagues to form the core of the physician assistant department&#8217;s faculty. All seven also maintain eligibility to practice clinically, which Maxwell said is standard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maxwell described conducting a five-day orientation the first week of August as \u201ca challenge.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough we definitely emphasized physical distancing,\u201d Maxwell said.&nbsp; \u201cWe did not want to take away the professor \/ student relationship that occurs in PA school.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New students were issued the full complement of personal protective equipment for on-campus instruction and field work that counterparts who examine and care for patients with COVID-19 wear in the field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pandemic \u201chas made us evaluate everything we do as educators, and medical professionals,\u201d Maxwell said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first day of class is Aug. 31.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As is the case with new physician assistant programs, UMES&#8217; accreditation is a five-year provisional credential.&nbsp; By year three, Maxwell said she&#8217;s hopeful a large pool of applicants will yield 30 students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students in UMES&#8217; program are pursuing a Master&#8217;s of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies, which will require an estimated 2,000 hours of intense training that will include eight clinical rotations with community partners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA local PA program is a great asset to our community&#8217;s young adults,\u201d said Dr. Charles B.
