{"id":2302,"date":"2020-03-07T12:54:53","date_gmt":"2020-03-07T16:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=2302"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:21:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:21:56","slug":"the-defiant-veteran-looked-contrite-in-his-portrait","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/the-defiant-veteran-looked-contrite-in-his-portrait\/","title":{"rendered":"The Defiant Veteran looked Contrite in his Portrait"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"375\" height=\"257\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/FJ4_1820-Hannah.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/FJ4_1820-Hannah.jpeg 375w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/FJ4_1820-Hannah-300x206.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Hannah McCabe at the moment she realized she won<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Holly Grove&#8217;s Hannah McCabe is 2020 regional spelling bee champ<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturday, March 7, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An eighth-grader from Eden who attends Holly Grove Christian School is the 2020 Maryland Eastern Shore Regional Spelling Bee champion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hannah McCabe said she entered her school-level bee reluctantly, yet performed well enough to qualify for Saturday&#8217;s eighth-annual competition sponsored by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hannah and her friend Eliza Nguyen together decided to try their luck at competitive spelling \u201csort of as a joke.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI really didn&#8217;t take it that seriously,\u201d Hannah said with a shrug and shy smile. \u201cI figured &#8216;What did I have to lose&#8217;?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing, it turned out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In roughly 70 minutes, the 13-year-old vanquished 23 other spellers with no-nonsense precision to earn a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. the last week of May.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2020 regional bee had two runners-up; fourth-grader Abigail Tan of Greenwood Elementary School in Princess Anne and Anjan Kharel, a sixth-grader representing Bennett Middle School in Salisbury. Both performed confidently in the early going, but stumbled in the 10<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;round, opening the door for McCabe, who spelled \u201c<em>celestial<\/em>\u201d correctly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When that scenario emerged, Hannah was still required to spell one additional word correctly, according to national spelling bee rules.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pronouncer Marilyn Buerkle barely finished saying \u201c<em>defiant<\/em>\u201d when Hannah responded with the correct spelling.\u00a0 She froze at the microphone, unsure she had accomplished what several weeks ago she dismissed as a lark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"358\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/2020-regional-spelling-bee-group-shot.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/2020-regional-spelling-bee-group-shot.jpeg 450w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/2020-regional-spelling-bee-group-shot-300x239.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Class of 2020 regional spelling bee competitors<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hannah said she fought off a case of nervousness that did not hit her until the second round, when she spelled &#8220;<em>junior<\/em>&#8221; correctly. Other words Hannah nailed included &#8220;<em>veteran<\/em>,&#8221; &#8220;<em>contrite<\/em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>portrait<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen, I got a little competitive,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While spellers are allowed &#8211; even encouraged &#8211; to ask background questions about words they are presented, Hannah forsook that option.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just kind of went for it,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Hannah heard Buerkle pronounce the championship word, she said she realized instantly \u201cI&#8217;m going to win this.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the identical reaction Chris McCabe, her father, said he had sitting in the audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was nervous for her standing up there\u201d with a chance to win, McCabe said. \u201cThen, I heard the word and said &#8216;oh my gosh, she&#8217;s going to win this.&#8217;\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eliza, who helped Hanna study the 4,000 words in a study guide all school champions are provided, said once her friend made it through the first several rounds, \u201cI knew she was going to go this far.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hannah \u201chas a way of excelling in a way I don&#8217;t think she even realizes,\u201d Eliza said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holly Grove&#8217;s bee coordinator Elisabeth Hays was in the Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts Center audience rooting for Hannah.
