{"id":2059,"date":"2019-02-06T05:24:20","date_gmt":"2019-02-06T09:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=2059"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:26:57","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:26:57","slug":"umes-where-these-historic-hats-hang-out-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/umes-where-these-historic-hats-hang-out-now\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES: Where these historic hats hang out now"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"278\" height=\"448\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Bunting-donation-Leeds-and-Twilley.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2060\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Bunting-donation-Leeds-and-Twilley.jpg 278w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Bunting-donation-Leeds-and-Twilley-186x300.jpg 186w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vintage Millinery Collection Preserved By Donation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wednesday, February 6, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University of Maryland Eastern Shore and history are no strangers.&nbsp; UMES recently received a gift exemplifying the richness of local history &#8211; and the evolution of women&#8217;s headwear in the 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 100 hats were donated to UMES by David McQueen of Westover, who was close to the collection&#8217;s original owner, the late Madelyn East Bunting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bunting, a Tasley, Va. native, lived in Pocomoke City and was known for her love of needlework, cooking and gardening.&nbsp; She served as a Sunday school teacher at Salem Methodist Church in Pocomoke, and accumulated a collection stylish headwear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to her obituary, Bunting was an \u201cactive member of American Legion Post 93 Auxiliary, and \u2026 a great source of information to the community regarding (its) past history.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe vividly recalled walking across the first drawbridge, attending the launching of ships from the Pocomoke City shipyards and the great fire of 1922.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bunting, who was 102 when she died in 2008,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/46114568\/madelyn-bunting\"><strong>now rests in the church&#8217;s cemetery<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;on Second Street not far from the Pocomoke River.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alissa Carr, UMES&#8217; Associate Vice President and Director of Marketing, described the experience of seeing the collection of ornate hats for the first time as \u201clike digging into buried treasure.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEach one is more unique than the last, and has a story to tell,\u201d Carr said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, Bunting&#8217;s extensive collection is a time capsule of a bygone fashion era &#8212; and her family&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"448\" height=\"306\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Bunting-donation-homemade-satin-hat-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2061\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Bunting-donation-homemade-satin-hat-1.jpg 448w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Bunting-donation-homemade-satin-hat-1-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A purple satin hat was hand woven. Two handwritten notes give more background; one reads \u201cAunt Maggie Bloxom made this hat -1965.\u201d&nbsp; A second notes Bunting&#8217;s older sister Edna E.
