{"id":1781,"date":"2019-03-02T07:56:02","date_gmt":"2019-03-02T11:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=1781"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:31:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:31:08","slug":"sixth-grader-wins-2019-regional-spelling-bee-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/sixth-grader-wins-2019-regional-spelling-bee-title\/","title":{"rendered":"Sixth-grader wins 2019 regional spelling bee title"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Austin-Loar-and-Hun-E.-Bee.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1783\" width=\"522\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Austin-Loar-and-Hun-E.-Bee.jpg 716w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Austin-Loar-and-Hun-E.-Bee-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 522px) 100vw, 522px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Regional spelling bee champion Austin Loar<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Salisbury&#8217;s Austin Loar is headed to Washington, D.C.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturday, March 2, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Austin Loar employed&nbsp;<strong><em>stoic discipline<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; words he spelled correctly &#8211; on his way Saturday to winning the 2019 Maryland Eastern Shore Regional Spelling Bee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Salisbury Middle School sixth-grader will represent Dorchester, Somerset, Worcester and Wicomico counties at the Scripps National Spelling Bee the last week of May in Washington, D.C.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loar, 12, secured the champion&#8217;s medal by spelling \u201c<strong><em>beachhead<\/em><\/strong>\u201d correctly in round 15.&nbsp; Praneeth Galigutte, a fourth-grader at Delmar Elementary School, was the runner-up in a field of 25 spellers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy legs were shaking like crazy,\u201d Loar said as he awaited the word that would give him the win.&nbsp; After a moment of hesitation, he acknowledged questioning whether there was a single or double \u201ch.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI knew the word,\u201d Loar said. \u201cI told myself &#8216;I am able to spell it.&#8217;\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After nine-year-old Galigutte stumbled on \u201choaxer,\u201d Loar first had to spell \u201c<strong><em>gracefully<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d which he did literally and figuratively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheila Loar said her son&#8217;s calm, on-stage demeanor is a reflection of his personality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re so proud of him,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loar eschewed questions about a word&#8217;s country of origin, definition or to hear it used in a sentence.&nbsp; Instead, he handled words such as&nbsp;<strong><em>brackish, hydrology<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong><em>bobbin<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;with ease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After winning his school-level competition, Loar followed online advice from the Scripps organization on preparing for the regional bee, which the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has sponsored since 2013.&nbsp; He estimated spending two-to-four hours a week of extra study on spelling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Words of Slavic origin, he said, give him the most trouble.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loar credited English teacher Tara Elliott with instilling in him the confidence he could win the regional event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The champion was hoping to celebrate with lunch that included a dish featuring \u201cramen,\u201d a word Aaron Zheng spelled correctly &#8212; ironically just before Loar did the same with \u201c<strong><em>expertise<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Salisbury&#8217;s Austin Loar is headed to Washington, D.C.
