{"id":1770,"date":"2019-05-07T07:49:58","date_gmt":"2019-05-07T11:49:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=1770"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:31:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:31:26","slug":"peace-freedom-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/peace-freedom-power\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Peace, Freedom &#038; Power&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"365\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Harriett-Tubman-Mariah-Terry.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Harriett-Tubman-Mariah-Terry.jpg 365w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Harriett-Tubman-Mariah-Terry-300x276.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Mariah Terry&#8217;s tribute to Harriet Tubman<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UMES artist&#8217;s work to grace Tubman National Historic Park<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday, May 7, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 100,000&nbsp;people have passed through the visitors&#8217; center at the&nbsp;Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park in Church Creek, Md. since it opened in 2017.&nbsp; Future visitors will soon have the opportunity to view artwork created by University of Maryland Eastern Shore students, including&nbsp;<strong>Mariah Terry<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her eye-catching and impactful portrayal of Tubman will grace the halls of the national park site dedicated to the life and memory of the abolitionist and former slave born Araminta Ross in Dorchester County.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terry&#8217;s oil painting she calls \u201cPeace, Freedom, and Power\u201d emerged from the freedom the senior sequential arts major had to create a piece related to Tubman&#8217;s life story.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI feel honored to have my painting displayed at the Harriet Tubman Center.&nbsp; She is a powerful figure, and her legacy is powerful,\u201d Terry said.&nbsp; Terry said she wanted her artwork to show the freedom fighter in a \u201cgentle and powerful\u201d way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first-generation college student credits the university&#8217;s sequential arts program, her UMES experience and participation in the Envision Art Club in helping her overcome shyness and developing as an artist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt first, I felt \u2026 my art was never good enough,\u201d she said.&nbsp; \u201cI now realize that I can do this.
