It only cost me $100 to make my dress for senior prom.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polite&#8217;s mother enrolled her in a sewing school class while in high school and set her on a path to UMES and the university&#8217;s fashion merchandising program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not too far from home. When I got here, I didn&#8217;t want to leave,\u201d she said about becoming a Hawk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bryonna&#8217;s garment production evolved from hoodies in high school to a (faux) fur jacket she made and sold for $50 her freshman year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey aren&#8217;t $50 anymore,\u201d she said with a laugh.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bryonna began making prom dresses in 2018 for customers in the Baltimore area. Currently, she has 11 dresses she is working on for this prom season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do class work throughout the day,\u201d Polite said, \u201cand in the evening I go into the sewing room until 2 a.m.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bryonna credits human ecology professor, Dr. Bridget Clinton-Scott, and 2016 alumna Octavia Outlaw with assisting her along her fashion merchandising experience at UMES.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fashion merchandising program at UMES has allowed me to better understand the business aspect of the industry.\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Bryonna-Polite_2019.jfif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1764\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students unveiled their newest designs at an April 29h fashion showcase in the Student Services Center.
