{"id":1751,"date":"2019-04-08T07:41:42","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T11:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=1751"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:31:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:31:49","slug":"military-drone-competition-to-feature-umes-engineering-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/military-drone-competition-to-feature-umes-engineering-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Military drone competition to feature UMES engineering students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Army-drone.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1754\" width=\"411\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Army-drone.jpg 804w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Army-drone-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Army-drone-768x461.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><figcaption><strong>UMES&#8217; engineering drone team is headed to Texas<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday, April 8, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">University of Maryland Eastern Shore engineering students have earned a spot to compete against 10 other schools in the inaugural HBCU\/MI Design Competition sponsored by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC) later this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team includes four seniors, three of whom currently are employed ahead of graduation:&nbsp;<strong>Kyle Baumann<\/strong>&nbsp;(Hardwire &#8211; Pocomoke City),&nbsp;<strong>Robert Perez<\/strong>&nbsp;(Naval Air Systems Command &#8211; southern Maryland) and&nbsp;<strong>Ethan Hitch<\/strong>&nbsp;(Northrup Grumman &#8211; Wallops Island, Va.). Aerospace engineering seniors&nbsp;<strong>Crista Campbell<\/strong>, certified pilot&nbsp;<strong>Scott Hogan<\/strong>&nbsp;and pilot coach Edward Brink round out the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Payam Matin, an engineering professor, said the students answered a call this past fall for proposals to design drones capable of addressing the following challenges: eliminating wire bundles in an innovative way in small drones and seeking a way to replace unmanned aerial vehicle parts with biologically-based materials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UMES team received an $8,000 grant to underwrite the cost to build the \u201cquad-copter\u201d (four propellers) and travel to the competition that will be held at the University of Texas at El Paso.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The national competition is a component of the CCDC&#8217;s commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-serving institutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are proud to host the inaugural HBCU\/MI Design Competition and garner insight from our nation&#8217;s future innovators,\u201d said Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins, CCDC commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis would be impossible without my UMES education,\u201d Perez said. \u201cParticipating as a member of this team allows our work to be recognized outside of the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Campbell expressed surprise when told the team would be participating in the inaugural competition. \u201cIt&#8217;s great to be a part of this cool project and seeing the practices in class applied to testing the operation of the prototype,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team&#8217;s solutions to the proposed challenges will be evaluated and their drone will fly in the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso.
