Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown<\/strong> understands the importance of military service and the role service members play in the safety and security of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Maryland Lieutenant Governor and retired Army Colonel emphasized that sentiment during his keynote speech at this year\u2019s \u201cSalute to Veterans\u201d Gala held at the Richard A. Henson Center on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re here \u2026 to recognize their role in defending, protecting, and preserving the nation that we love,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to repay an unpayable debt. We can never truly repay what our veterans have given us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual event, held on Nov. 13, was co-sponsored by UMES and the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and raised funds for the Silver Star Scholarship Fund. The scholarship supports first-year UMES students who are honorably discharged veterans, a child of a veteran, or a child of a service member killed in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emceeing the event was Maryland Secretary of Housing and former Salisbury, Maryland, Mayor Jake Day<\/strong>, who is active in the Army National Guard. Day commended Brown\u2019s resume of public and military service and how it translates for fellow Marylanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour passion for this state and for your country truly shines through,\u201d Day said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Brown closed his speech, he reiterated the importance of keeping the promise to give back and care for veterans and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must ensure, not just with words, but with action, that no veteran is left behind,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s a responsibility for all of us in our communities, our workplaces, our daily lives, and as a solemn obligation we owe to all who serve. It\u2019s an obligation that extends beyond their years in uniform, but for the decades that follow.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
