(Photo courtesy of Virgin Galactic)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University of Maryland Eastern Shore soared above and beyond into the stars as the institution was represented aboard Virgin Galactic\u2019s <em>Galactic 05<\/em> spaceship on Nov. 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A payload, designed by UMES assistant professor Dr. <strong>Aaron Persad<\/strong> tested how confined fluid behaves in a low-gravity environment, was part of the ship\u2019s second dedicated research flight. <strong>Kellie Gerardi<\/strong>, the payload specialist and bioastronautics researcher for the International Institute for the Astronautical Sciences, conducted the experiments in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat\u2019s really special about this opportunity is we\u2019re doing it all through commercial means,\u201d Persad said. \u201cWe\u2019re not going through a government agency. It\u2019s our own payload. We found our own funding and now it\u2019s going to space. (Photo courtesy of Virgin Galactic)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persad was on location in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico at Spaceport America, the hub for Virgin Galactic and the world\u2019s first purpose-built spaceport, as part of the mission team and as a principal investigator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective of the experiment was to investigate the equilibrium states of a fluid in freefall.
