{"id":1477,"date":"2017-09-26T09:18:58","date_gmt":"2017-09-26T13:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=1477"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:38:52","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:38:52","slug":"professor-publishes-one-of-a-kind-text-resource","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/professor-publishes-one-of-a-kind-text-resource\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor publishes one of a kind text resource"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Tyler-Love-Book-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Tyler-Love-Book-2.jpeg 250w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Tyler-Love-Book-2-201x300.jpeg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday, September 26, 2017<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re keeping up with the latest on educational settings for hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the community and schools, you&#8217;ve probably seen the term, \u201cmakerspace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMakerspaces have been popping up more recently in school libraries and media centers, which can pose safety issues if not designed and maintained correctly,\u201d said Dr. Tyler Love, an associate professor and&nbsp;coordinator of UMES&#8217; Technology and Engineering Education program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safer STEM-teaching students to use high-tech tools and equipment safely-was the inspiration for Love&#8217;s book, \u201cSafer Makerspaces, Fab Labs and STEM Labs:&nbsp; A Collaborative Guide,\u201d published August 31 by the National Safety Consultants LLC with co-author Dr. Kenneth Russell Roy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you talk about safety and meeting the needs of instructors and students, it was the perfect collaboration for us, as the two head safety consultants representing STEM professional associations, to write the book,\u201d Love said.&nbsp; Love is the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association safety editor and a National Science Teachers Association safety advisory board member.&nbsp; Roy is the NSTA&#8217;s chief safety consultant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two have published together before.&nbsp; This one, Love said was \u201ca labor of love,\u201d no pun intended, taking a little over a year to complete.&nbsp; The benefit of the book, he said, is that it highlights the importance of qualified STEM teachers like those prepared through UMES&#8217; unique teacher education programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love describes the book as \u201cthe only one on the market dealing solely with safety hazards, liability and safer designs regarding makerspaces, STEM labs and fab labs for primary, secondary and post-secondary schools, teachers, administrators and community centers and libraries.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edward C.
