The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is holding a fireside chat with President Heidi M. Anderson<\/a> and special guest Dr. Penny Brown Reynolds,<\/a> the U.S. Department of Agriculture deputy assistant secretary for civil rights. Part of the university\u2019s Founders\u2019 Week festivities, the \u201cConversation on Civil Rights: A Look at the Present, A Look to the Future\u201d is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 12:30 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n

Dr. Penny Brown Reynolds<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Brown Reynolds is described as being \u201cone of the nation\u2019s preeminent experts and scholars in criminal justice, civil rights and the organizational change management.\u201d The juris doctor (Georgia State University College of Law) has over 30 years of experience in law, public service, civil rights and justice. She has worked in all three branches of government, including serving as executive counsel to Georgia\u2019s Governor, chief of staff and executive counsel to Georgia\u2019s Lt. Governor, a state trial court judge, Georgia State Assistant Attorney General, Assistant District Attorney and a judicial clerk for the Georgia Court of Appeals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to her J.D., she holds a doctorate in criminal justice form Nova Southeastern University, a master\u2019s degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center, a bachelor\u2019s degree from Georgia State University and postdoctoral work at Harvard Kennedy School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The free event is open to the community and will be held in the Student Services Center ballroom on campus. UMES is celebrating the 137th<\/sup> anniversary of its founding in 1886.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
