{"id":8305,"date":"2021-10-08T15:39:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T19:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=8305"},"modified":"2024-01-26T09:43:40","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T14:43:40","slug":"national-science-foundation-renews-umes-reu-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/national-science-foundation-renews-umes-reu-site\/","title":{"rendered":"National Science Foundation renews UMES REU Site"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/REU-Assateague-2018.1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9354\" title=\"REU-Assateague\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Undergraduates primarily from schools with limited research opportunities or those who are from under-represented groups will continue to be involved in marine and estuarine sciences research at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore thanks to a three-year renewal of a $323,985&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umes.edu\/reu\">UMES\u2019 Research Experience for Undergraduates in Marine and Estuarine Science<\/a>&nbsp;is slated to train eight students, especially rising sophomores and juniors, for 10 weeks during the summers of 2021-23,\u201d said Dr. Paulinus Chigbu, associate dean for research, development and graduate education; director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/lmrcsc\/\">NOAA Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center<\/a>; and principal investigator for the program at UMES.&nbsp; \u201cThey will learn how research is conducted and many will have the opportunity to present the results of their work at scientific conferences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The REU program operated through the university\u2019s NOAA LMRCSC and the NSF Center for the Integrated Study of Coastal Ecosystem Processes and Dynamics has helped prepare 123 students interested in a career in the field over the past 12 years.&nbsp; They represent more than 60 institutions in the marine and estuarine sciences, Chigbu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the assistance of Program Coordinator Dr. Margaret Sexton, faculty mentors, program staff and graduate students, interns conduct research projects, take field trips and attend seminars and workshops related to science careers. Research topics have included the eutrophication effects on benthic macroinvertebrates, mechanisms of biofilm formation and antifouling effects of extracts from natural sources, climate variability and food web dynamics, antibiotic resistance of&nbsp;<em>Vibrio<\/em>&nbsp;species isolated from oysters, and biology and ecology of gelatinous zooplankton, Chigbu said.
