{"id":8257,"date":"2021-10-08T14:50:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T18:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=8257"},"modified":"2024-01-25T11:28:18","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T16:28:18","slug":"umes-welcomes-economist-to-sans-and-extension-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/umes-welcomes-economist-to-sans-and-extension-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES welcomes economist to SANS and Extension programs."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/TD2-Luis-Penalevano-3827-preferred.1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9322\" title=\"Dr. Luis Pena-Levano\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/TD2-Luis-Penalevano-3827-preferred.1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/TD2-Luis-Penalevano-3827-preferred.1-270x300.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Luis Pe\u00f1a-L\u00e9vano&nbsp;<\/strong>has joined the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/SANS\/\">School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences<\/a>&nbsp;as an assistant professor of agribusiness and resource economics in its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/agriculture\/\">Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences<\/a>.&nbsp; He will also be a key member of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/Extension\/\">UMES Extension<\/a>&nbsp;as an economist helping in the area of farm business management and community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pe\u00f1a-L\u00e9vano\u2019s expertise lies in agribusiness, financial management, international trade, agricultural and environmental policy, and mathematical optimization.&nbsp; His most recent post was as a lecturer in the University of Florida\u2019s Department of Food and Resources Economics.&nbsp; While there, he received its 2020 \u201cInnovation Teaching Award\u201d in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.&nbsp; &nbsp;Pe\u00f1a-L\u00e9vano has taught microeconomics, mathematical methods for economics, international trade, agribusiness financial management, futures and option markets, and environmental and resource economics.&nbsp; At UMES, he will instruct graduate students on quantitative methods, micor\/macroeconomics and advanced agricultural finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Pe\u00f1a-L\u00e9vano is an accomplished agricultural economist who will complement the work of the UMES Extension team by adding an economic dimension to our existing informal educational programs,\u201d said Dr. E. Nelson Escobar, associate dean for UMES Extension.&nbsp; \u201cHe will also provide guidance to the planning of future needs assessments for the residents of the Eastern Shore of Maryland.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A native of Peru, Pe\u00f1a-L\u00e9vano has interacted with agriculture since his early days.&nbsp; His family, he said, taught him the importance of \u201cequilibrium in life,\u201d which he applies to his daily routine and how he sees economics. \u201cBalance between family, friends, job, hobbies and time to rest are crucial for a happy life, which is the principle of economics, optimize all conditions under limited resources.\u201d His interest in the field stems from his passion for trying to understand how economics can improve society\u2019s quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pe\u00f1a-L\u00e9vano is author or co-author of numerous peer-reviewed articles in the field related to the environment, economics and agribusiness.&nbsp; In 2020, his article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%252Fs10640-019-00339-6\">Climate Change Interactions with Agriculture, Forestry Sequestration, and Food Security<\/a>,\u201d co-authored with colleagues from Purdue University, was awarded \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10640-020-00418-z\">Best Publication<\/a>\u201d in the journal, Environmental and Resources Economics.&nbsp; The European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists critiqued his work commenting, \u201cIn this superb paper, the authors produce both a truly excellent example of multidisciplinary collaboration and internationally significant contribution to our understanding of the interplay between climate change, mitigation policies, and their impacts on the global economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also last year, his article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.choicesmagazine.org\/choices-magazine\/theme-articles\/covid-19-and-the-agriculture-industry-labor-supply-chains-and-consumer-behavior\">COVID-19 and the Agriculture Industry:&nbsp; Labor, Supply Chains and Consumer Behavior<\/a>\u201d was promoted in more than 30 national media outlets.&nbsp; His most recent article written with his colleagues is&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.choicesmagazine.org\/choices-magazine\/theme-articles\/functional-foods-fad-or-path-to-prosperity\/latin-americas-superfood-economy-producing-and-marketing-aa-chia-seeds-and-maca-root\">Latin America\u2019s Superfood Economy:&nbsp; Producing and Marketing Acai, Chia Seeds, and Maca Root<\/a>\u201d in the January issue of Choices, a magazine of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association.&nbsp; He is currently writing the new version of two books for McGraw Hill slated for publication in 2021, the second edition of \u201cSchaum\u2019s Outline of Mathematical Methods for Business, Finance and Economics\u201d and the fourth edition of \u201cSchaum\u2019s Outline of Calculus for Business, Economics and Finance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pe\u00f1a-L\u00e9vano is also a frequent reviewer of articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals such as the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the Environmental and Resource Economics Journal and Choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The economist earned a doctoral degree in agricultural economics in 2017 from Purdue University in Indiana.&nbsp; His dissertation, \u201cCarbon Taxes, Forest Carbon Sequestration, Climate-Induced Land Yield Changes and their Interactions,\u201d received a \u201cDistinguished Dissertation Award.\u201d&nbsp; Pe\u00f1a-L\u00e9vano holds a master\u2019s degree in agricultural and applied economics from the University of Georgia and a bachelor\u2019s in food science and agroindustry engineering from Zamorano University in Honduras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Photo by Todd Dudek, photographer\/videographer, Agricultural Communications, University of Maryland Eastern Shore,&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:tdudek@umes.edu\">tdudek@umes.edu<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Gail Stephens, agricultural communications and media associate, School&nbsp;of Agricultural and Natural Sciences, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 410-621-3850,&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:gcstephens@umes.edu\">gcstephens@umes.edu<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Luis Pe\u00f1a-L\u00e9vano&nbsp;has joined the&nbsp;School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences&nbsp;as an assistant professor of agribusiness and resource economics in its&nbsp;Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences.&nbsp; He will also be a key member of&nbsp;UMES Extension&nbsp;as an economist helping in the area of farm business management and community development.
