{"id":8227,"date":"2021-10-06T13:38:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T17:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=8227"},"modified":"2024-01-25T10:40:09","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T15:40:09","slug":"elnaiems-research-is-featured-on-cover-of-plos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/elnaiems-research-is-featured-on-cover-of-plos\/","title":{"rendered":"Elnaiem&#8217;s research is featured on cover of PLOS."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Elnaiem-PLOS-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9301\" title=\"Elnaiem PLOS cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Elnaiem-PLOS-cover.jpg 320w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Elnaiem-PLOS-cover-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Elnaiem-PLOS-cover-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Elnaiem-PLOS-cover-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Elnaiem-PLOS-cover-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visceral Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease in humans that attacks the internal organs of those who contract it and is fatal if left untreated.&nbsp; The diagnosis and treatment is difficult and cost prohibitive for poor families.&nbsp; There is no vaccine.&nbsp; East Africa has the world\u2019s highest incidence of VL transmitted through bites from female sand flies (<em>Phlebotomus orientalis<\/em>).&nbsp; Globally 31,000\u201390,000 new cases are reported each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dr. Dia-Eldin Elnaiem<\/strong>, a tenured professor in University of Maryland Eastern Shore\u2019s Department of Natural Sciences, and a group of colleagues were recently featured on the cover of PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases for a pilot study conducted in rural villages in Sudan.&nbsp; It is the culmination of four years of research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The journal described their work as \u201cpioneering entomological studies demonstrating that a single application of residual insecticide to boundary fences and hut exterior walls results in an 83-99% reduction in vector numbers over the short sand fly season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Sudanese villages where the disease is endemic, people live in grass huts surrounded by tall thatched reed fences.&nbsp; Uncomfortably high temperatures during the VL transmission season forces residents to sleep outdoors in their yards without bednets where they are exposed to bites from the insect, Elnaiem said.&nbsp; The flies are a highly exophilic\/exophagic species that pose a major challenge to current management of VL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their journal article, \u201cOutdoor Residual Insecticide Spraying (ODRS), a new Approach for the Control of the Exophilic Vectors of Human Visceral Leishmaniasis:&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Phlebotomus orientalis<\/em>&nbsp;in East Africa,\u201d outlined their study that evaluated the application of deltamethrin insecticide and its effects on sand fly numbers during three experiments over some 2,000 trap nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe study demonstrated the feasibility and high entomological efficacy of spraying the outside of the huts and fences (ODRS) and spraying the boundary fences alone (RODRS) and the low cost relative to current practices,\u201d Elnaiem said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"287\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Elnaiem-Dr.0.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9302\" title=\"Dr. Dia Elnaiem\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Elnaiem-Dr.0.jpg 287w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Elnaiem-Dr.0-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Costs for ODRS and RODRS delivery were $5.76 and $3.48 per household, respectively.
