{"id":8219,"date":"2021-10-06T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=8219"},"modified":"2024-01-26T11:31:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T16:31:24","slug":"toxicology-doctoral-student-presents-research-on-prostate-cancer-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/toxicology-doctoral-student-presents-research-on-prostate-cancer-risks\/","title":{"rendered":"Toxicology doctoral student presents research on prostate cancer risks."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Dissertation-Azah-Mohamed.1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9423\" width=\"274\" height=\"365\" title=\"Azah Mohamed\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Dissertation-Azah-Mohamed.1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/Dissertation-Azah-Mohamed.1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Azah Abdalla Mohamed<\/strong>&nbsp;defended her doctoral dissertation, \u201cCadmium Chloride-Induced MiroRNA Deregulation in Promoting Prostate Cancer Aggressiveness,\u201d on October 16.&nbsp; She is a candidate for a doctorate in toxicology at UMES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A native of Sudan, Mohamed has been in the U.S. for some 20 years and now resides in Salisbury.&nbsp; Her \u201cconcern for public health and risk management of human exposure to toxic compounds\u201d led her to her research thesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her bipartite research focused on the genetic differences that influence prostate cancer disparities between African Americans and European Americans and the cancer risk, regardless of race, due to environmental exposure to heavy metals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI validated the expression and functional roles of 10 specific microRNA molecules between African Americans and Americans of European descent using quantitative reverse transcription (RT \u2013qPCR), western blot methods,\u201d Mohamed said.&nbsp; \u201cThe results showed a difference in their expression affecting their functionality, which in turn, contribute to the aggressiveness of prostate cancer in African Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohamed also evaluated the risk of exposure to heavy metals, such as cadmium, in regulating microRNA and&nbsp;an increased risk of prostate cancer regardless of race. \u201cThe results of this part of my research showed that cadmium affects the cells&#8217; viability, inducing proliferation of the cell and changing microRNA expression and their functionality,\u201d Mohamed said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAzah\u2019s research work provided evidence that microRNA dysfunction is a critical event involved in the process of Cadmium-modulated prostate cancer progression,\u201d said Dr. Bi-Dar Wang, an assistant professor in UMES\u2019 Pharmacy Program and Mohamed\u2019s research advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohamed holds a master\u2019s degree from Penn State University\u2019s School of Medicine and a bachelor\u2019s degree from the Sudan University for Sciences and Technology.&nbsp; She would like to apply her education, knowledge and research to a federal job with the Environmental Protection Agency or the Food and Drug Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gail Stephens, agricultural communications and media associate, School&nbsp;of Agricultural and Natural Sciences, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 410-621-3850,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"mailto:gcstephens@umes.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>gcstephens@umes.edu.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Azah Abdalla Mohamed&nbsp;defended her doctoral dissertation, \u201cCadmium Chloride-Induced MiroRNA Deregulation in Promoting Prostate Cancer Aggressiveness,\u201d on October 16.&nbsp; She is a candidate for a doctorate in toxicology at UMES.
