{"id":8210,"date":"2021-10-06T12:50:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T16:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=8210"},"modified":"2024-01-26T11:05:07","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T16:05:07","slug":"umes-students-celebrate-national-chemistry-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/umes-students-celebrate-national-chemistry-week\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES students celebrate National Chemistry Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/1567180167225.2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9410\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" title=\"National Chemistry Wk logo\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/1567180167225.2.png 550w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/01\/1567180167225.2-300x159.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It was a beautiful Indian summer day on the quad in front of Carver Hall when the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Chemists and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/LSAMP\/\">Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation&nbsp;<\/a>students met (masks on and six feet apart) to see which team could formulate the best \u201celephant toothpaste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Deborah Sauder, a chemistry professor in UMES\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/Sciences\/\">Department of Natural Sciences<\/a>&nbsp;and an LSAMP advisor, organized the October 22 event to celebrate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acs.org\/content\/acs\/en\/education\/outreach\/ncw.html\">National Chemistry Week<\/a>&nbsp;promoted by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acs.org\/content\/acs\/en\/education.html\">American Chemical Society<\/a>.&nbsp; This year\u2019s theme was \u201cSticking with Chemistry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cart equipped with chemicals, gloves, safety goggles and graduated cylinders stood on the brick sidewalk a short distance away from where bright blue plastic kiddie pools sat on the campus lawn.&nbsp; One team at a time, a representative filled a cylinder with industrial strength peroxide, added a couple squirts of dish detergent, ran some streaks of food coloring down the sides and went to the pools where they slowly added a reagent (not mentioned here, because as we all know, you shouldn\u2019t try this at home!) to cause a chemical reaction.&nbsp; Onlookers squealed with surprise when the mixture skyrocketed and came down forming a giant glob of \u201ctoothpaste\u201d big enough for an elephant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI expected the reaction to just bubble over in the beaker and get really fat.&nbsp; What surprised me is when it shot into the air not even seconds from me pouring the peroxide.&nbsp; It was crazy.&nbsp; I had no choice but to run,\u201d said Hawk track and field member Destiny Parker who is also a Richard A.
