{"id":8192,"date":"2021-10-06T11:46:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T15:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=8192"},"modified":"2023-06-23T11:47:45","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T15:47:45","slug":"summer-geosciences-bridge-program-prepares-students-for-college-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/summer-geosciences-bridge-program-prepares-students-for-college-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Geosciences Bridge Program prepares students for college life."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/uploadedImages\/_WEBSITES\/SANS\/Content\/SANS_Monthly_Digest-09_2020\/Sumemr%202020%20Geoscience%20Program.3.jpg\" alt=\"Summer Geosciences Bridge Program\" width=\"948\" height=\"532\" title=\"Summer Geosciences Bridge Program\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This year, seven incoming freshmen participated in the University of Maryland Eastern Shore&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/cscgeosciences\/\">Summer Geosciences Bridge Program<\/a>, organized virtually for the first time in seven years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students attended online lectures in various areas of geoscience, including marine science, atmospheric science and remote sensing\/GIS, said Dr. Paulinus Chigbu, the University System of Maryland Wilson H. Elkins Professor of Marine Science at UMES and co-director of the summer program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants, he said, also engaged in chemistry lectures, interactive labs like \u201cFish Banks,\u201d which focused on scientific policy, and a downsized version of the annual \u201cCoastal Clean-Up\u201d called, \u201cDo YOUR part Clean-Up,\u201d where the student interns went to a local park or beach on their own to collect trash.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professional development webinars such as \u201cTools for Success,\u201d \u201cStudy Habits, Note- taking and Time Management,\u201d \u201cResume and Professional Writing\u201d and \u201cScientific Communication\u201d&nbsp;all set the foundation for student success along with information on how to do an \u201cElevator Pitch\u201d and scholarship and internship internet searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opportunities existed for the future undergraduates to network virtually with two UMES graduate students, Kayle Krieg and Kasondra Rubalcaya, who shared their academic experiences at UMES and their research projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interns worked on mini-projects over the course of the six-week program and presented their research results at a virtual mini-symposium on August 7.&nbsp; Topics ranged from \u201cPhysical and Chemical Characteristics of the Maryland Coastal Bays\u201d to \u201cDistribution of Mud Crab ((<em>Dyspanopeus sayi<\/em>), Lady Crab (<em>Ovalipes ocellatus<\/em>) and Horseshore Crab (<em>Limulus Polyphemus<\/em>) in the Coastal Bays of Maryland.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were able to enroll in and get credit for successful completion of a college level math course to put on their transcripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFaculty, staff and parents were pleased with the quality of presentations given by the students,\u201d Chigbu said.&nbsp; \u201cThe students stated enthusiastically that the program has placed them a step ahead of other incoming freshmen by preparing them for college life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Ali Ishaque, an associate professor in the Department of Natural Sciences, was the co-director of the program and Cy\u2019Anna Scott, the coordinator.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year, seven incoming freshmen participated in the University of Maryland Eastern Shore&#8217;s&nbsp;Summer Geosciences Bridge Program, organized virtually for the first time in seven years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp; Students attended online lectures in various areas of geoscience, including marine science, atmospheric science and remote sensing\/GIS, said Dr. Paulinus Chigbu, the University System of&#8230;<span class=\"cpschool-read-more-link-holder\"><a class=\"btn btn-basic cpschool-read-more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/summer-geosciences-bridge-program-prepares-students-for-college-life\/\">Read more <span class=\"sr-only\">Summer Geosciences Bridge Program prepares students for college life.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":103,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_coblocks_attr":"","_coblocks_dimensions":"","_coblocks_responsive_height":"","_coblocks_accordion_ie_support":"","wds_primary_category":18,"footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"post_folder":[],"class_list":["post-8192","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sans-news-releases"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8192","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/103"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8192"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8192\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8192"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8192"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8192"},{"taxonomy":"post_folder","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/post_folder?post=8192"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
