{"id":8090,"date":"2021-10-06T09:39:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T13:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=8090"},"modified":"2023-06-23T09:41:36","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T13:41:36","slug":"graduate-student-takes-home-first-place-at-ern-national-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/graduate-student-takes-home-first-place-at-ern-national-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate student takes home first place at ERN national conference."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/uploadedImages\/_WEBSITES\/SANS\/Content\/SANS_Monthly_Digest-02-2020\/BTD-Lenneisha%20Gilbert.2.jpg\" alt=\"Lenneisha Gilbert\" title=\"Lenneisha Gilbert\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lenneisha Gilbert recently won a first-place award in the ecology, environmental and earth sciences category of graduate oral presentations at the 10<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;annual Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM in Washington, D.C.&nbsp; The event is sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Science Foundation.&nbsp; Her presentation was titled, \u201cThe Effect of Trap Crops on the Growth and Development of Watermelon.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gilbert is a second-year candidate for a master\u2019s degree in food and agricultural sciences at UMES and credits her success to her mentor over the past three years, Dr. Simon Zebelo, a recently tenured professor of entomology in the Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences, and fellow master\u2019s student Brandon Jackson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am beyond grateful to have a team of such intelligent scientists to motivate me and I certainly would not have come this far or won the Emerging Research National award in ecology without the assistance of my mentor and colleague,\u201d Gilbert said.&nbsp; \u201cDr. Zebelo exemplifies the strength, passion, determination, discipline and dedication it takes to be an excellent leader and professional in the academic field. Due to his extraordinary teaching capability, my colleague and I can become emerging scientists within our research field.
