{"id":7893,"date":"2021-09-22T13:08:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-22T17:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=7893"},"modified":"2023-06-22T13:09:41","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T17:09:41","slug":"efnep-celebrates-50-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/efnep-celebrates-50-years\/","title":{"rendered":"EFNEP Celebrates 50 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/uploadedImages\/_WEBSITES\/SANS\/Content\/SANS_Monthly_Digest_-_09_2019\/50th%20Anniversary%20logo.png\" alt=\"EFNEP 50th Anniversary Logo\" width=\"257\" height=\"182\" title=\"EFNEP 50th Anniversary Logo\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UMES Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), a USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) program, is celebrating 50 years of providing life-changing information geared toward reducing the disproportionate incidences of nutrition insecurity among low-income populations.&nbsp; According to NIFA, nutrition insecurity is characterized by poor nutrition, limited physical activity, and unsafe food practices and EFNEP is at the forefront of nutrition education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EFNEP programs are available in every state, U.S. territory and the District of Columbia.&nbsp; They are each a part of the Cooperative Extension programs that are housed within the nation\u2019s 76 land-grant universities.&nbsp; The programs reach some 200,000 low-income adults and 450,000 low-income youth in rural and urban communities each year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At UMES,&nbsp;<strong>Dr. Virginie Zoumenou<\/strong>&nbsp;leads the program. With her team, she is inviting the campus community and the community at large to celebrate by way of two separate events on Wednesday, September 25.&nbsp; An open house is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Richard A.
