{"id":6731,"date":"2022-12-05T16:11:36","date_gmt":"2022-12-05T21:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=6731"},"modified":"2024-05-20T13:39:31","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T17:39:31","slug":"abrcms-draft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-monthly-digest\/nov-dec-2022\/abrcms-draft\/","title":{"rendered":"LSAMP students and faculty present research at ABRCMS 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2022\/12\/ABRCMS-LSAMP-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6734\" width=\"488\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2022\/12\/ABRCMS-LSAMP-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2022\/12\/ABRCMS-LSAMP-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2022\/12\/ABRCMS-LSAMP-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2022\/12\/ABRCMS-LSAMP-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2022\/12\/ABRCMS-LSAMP-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">UMES LSAMP students at ABRCMS, from left, are Stacey Carver, Jay Easter, Fabiola Beauvoir, Emma Jones, Oluwatomisin Salami and Iyinyeoluwa Okulate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>UMES\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/\">School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences<\/a> was well-represented at this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/abrcms.org\/\">Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists<\/a>.&nbsp; Six students in the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation at UMES joined some 3,000 undergraduates in conveying their research November 9-12 in Anaheim, with one coming away with a first place poster presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jay Easter, a senior majoring in engineering with a mechanical engineering concentration, earned first place for his poster in the category Engineering, Physics and Mathematics.&nbsp; The title of his research poster was \u201cInvestigating Preservation of Local Structure in 2-D Re<sub>6<\/sub>Se<sub>8<\/sub>Cl<sub>2<\/sub> After Surface Functionalization.\u201d The presentation focused on his summer research conducted at Columbia University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Easter viewed the event as invaluable, citing the opportunity to attend professional development workshops, networking with professionals in his field of interest and like-minded peers, and presenting his research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom the professional development sessions we learned about postgraduate opportunities and preparation, best practices for research success and took part in discussions surrounding the notion of being a member of an underrepresented group in STEM,\u201d Easter said.&nbsp; \u201cThe networking aspect of the conference was in the form of open meals held specifically for the purpose of facilitating engagement among student presenters and the faculty and sponsoring agencies attending.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenting research, he said, challenged students to use their scientific communication skills to proficiently share their research.&nbsp; Like Easter, Stacey Carver, a senior biology major, presented a poster.&nbsp; The category was Social and Behavioral Sciences and Public Health, with the topic, \u201cInteractions of Wildlife with a Host-targeted Tick Control Device at Two Field Study Sites in Maryland.\u201d&nbsp; Students who shared research through oral presentations were: Fabiola Beauvoir (junior, biology) \u201cProtein Expression of the Insulin Receptor and Insulin Signaling Molecules in the Kidney of a Hyperglycemic Zebrafish Model,\u201d Oluwatomisin Salami (sophomore, biology) \u201cZinc Chloride Increases nhe3 Gene Expression and Induces Oxidative Stress in the Kidney of Zebrafish,\u201d and Iyinyeoluwa Okulate (senior, biology) \u201cInsulin Administered via Intraperitoneal Injection Upregulates Sodium Hydrogen Exchanger 3 (NHE3) Gene Expression in the Zebrafish Kidney,\u201d all in the category Physiology and Pharmacology.&nbsp; Fabiola, Salami and Okulate are all undergraduate research assistants in the Bell lab.
