{"id":2401,"date":"2020-01-08T19:21:40","date_gmt":"2020-01-08T23:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=2401"},"modified":"2024-05-17T10:06:05","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T14:06:05","slug":"umes-is-partner-on-usda-nifa-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/for-the-media\/news-releases\/umes-is-partner-on-usda-nifa-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES is Partner on USDA-NIFA Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRINCESS ANNE, MD- (January 8, 2020)<\/strong>-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is participating as a partner on two National Institute of Food and Agriculture-USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program grants, said Berran Rogers Jr., coordinator, Small Farm Program, UMES Cooperative Extension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first is an award of $199,786 for the project, \u201cChesapeake Grows:&nbsp; A Regional Approach to new Farmer Success,\u201d with partner Future Harvest-Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture.&nbsp; The goal, Rogers said, is \u201cto launch a cross-cutting pilot program aimed at growing and diversifying the new farmer pipeline across the Chesapeake region and to improve new operations\u2019 long-term viability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chesapeake Grows is a one-year pilot program that will enable a collaboration of seven partners to trial, evaluate and refine new region-wide programming and networking opportunities for beginning farmers.&nbsp; UMES\u2019 role, he said, is to \u201cfurther FHCASA\u2019s capacity to promote and deliver education programs throughout Delmarva; to recruit and provide outreach opportunities for socially disadvantaged, limited resource and beginning farmers to participate; and to develop and host beginning farmer training opportunities at the UMES demonstration farm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES is partnering with Delaware State University on the \u201cDelaware Native American Beginning Farmer Education Initiative,\u201d a grant award of $446,272.&nbsp; The project aims to make a concerted effort to work with the Native American Indian tribes on Delmarva.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDSA will take the lead in developing a comprehensive educational curriculum accompanied by appropriate outreach and training activities that will be an ideal fit for the underserved audiences targeted by this project,\u201d Rogers said.&nbsp; He will play a key role in working with the project team in developing and administering evaluation instruments to assess overall program impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&#8220;This collaboration will allow us to leverage resources and strengthen our capacity to better serve our farmer clientele,&#8221; Rogers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gail Stephens, agricultural communications and media associate, School&nbsp; of Agricultural &amp; Natural Sciences, 410-621-3850,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stg15.umes.edu\/SANS\/Content\/Extension-News-Releases\/UMES-receives-USDA-funding-to-embark-on-new-research-and-extension-project\/gcstephens@umes.edu\">gcstephens@umes.edu.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>UMES Extension programs are open to all citizens without regard to race, color, gender, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, martial or parental status, or national origin.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PRINCESS ANNE, MD- (January 8, 2020)-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is participating as a partner on two National Institute of Food and Agriculture-USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program grants, said Berran Rogers Jr., coordinator, Small Farm Program, UMES Cooperative Extension.
