Larry Hogan for them to experience an in-person&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/ourfocus\/civilrights\/agdiscovery\/ct_agdiscovery_program\">AgDiscovery<\/a>&nbsp;summer program this year at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.&nbsp; As with many activities, the 2020 edition was canceled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are so happy that conditions have allowed for participants to reside in dorms and have the opportunity to see what it is like living on a college campus,\u201d said Corrie Cotton, a research assistant professor in UMES\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/agriculture\/\">&nbsp;Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences<\/a>&nbsp;and one of the program directors.&nbsp; \u201cThey are just getting acclimated, but have already gone on a field trip and have participated in hands-on activities related to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/4-h-youth-development\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1711\">4-H STEM<\/a>, animal care, sustainable food systems, aquaponics, agribusiness and threats to global food security related to plant disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"321\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2021\/11\/AgDiscovery-4-H-activ.2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2021\/11\/AgDiscovery-4-H-activ.2.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2021\/11\/AgDiscovery-4-H-activ.2-300x241.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Inspection Service, AgDiscovery is a free opportunity for young minds to explore agricultural sciences and gain knowledge about related careers, such as wildlife management, veterinary medicine, biotechnology, entomology, food safety, food production, agribusiness and forestry, Cotton said.&nbsp; UMES\u2019 program is in its ninth year and has introduced over 140 students to the diverse careers and opportunities in the field.&nbsp; \u201cAgriculture is so much more than farming,\u201d she said. \u201cIt touches every aspect of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cParticipants learn through a series of student-centered labs, workshops, research projects and field trips,\u201d Cotton said.&nbsp; \u201cThey also have a chance to interact with scientists conducting state-of-the-art research at the UMES Agricultural Experiment Station and at regional research centers.
