The 10 a.m. virtual seminar will be conducted by Dr. Nadine Burton-Stubbs, an alternative crop specialist with the Small Farm Outreach Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is an old saying, \u2018Let food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food,\u2019 that has been attributed to Hippocrates,\u201d Burton-Stubbs said.&nbsp; \u201cBok Choy, which has been used for centuries for medicinal purposes, is such a food.\u201d&nbsp; Hippocrates, the famous Greek physician, considered nutrition one of the essential tools for a health practitioner and it is incorporated into the original Hippocratic oath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ancient vegetable (Brassica Rapa Subspc. chinensis) has been slowly gaining popularity among small farmers in North America, Burton-Stubbs said.&nbsp; Two predominant markets have emerged, California and Alberta, Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2021\/09\/Nadine-Burton.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1463\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The webinar will introduce participants to the basics of bok choy and its health benefits and offer an in-depth look into the production and economics of the vegetable as an alternative&nbsp;crop for Delmarva farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burton-Stubbs has been growing bok choy on the UMES Demonstration Farm in Princess Anne and will share her insights from experience and research with the crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interested persons including small farmers and home gardening enthusiasts can register for the webinar at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/whybokchoy2020.eventbrite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whybokchoy2020.eventbrite.com<\/a>.&nbsp;
