{"id":1991,"date":"2020-06-08T18:26:26","date_gmt":"2020-06-08T22:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/?p=1991"},"modified":"2024-05-17T10:15:27","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T14:15:27","slug":"tri-county-residents-focus-of-umes-health-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/sans-news-releases\/tri-county-residents-focus-of-umes-health-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Tri-County residents focus of UMES health program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2021\/10\/Virginie-Zoumenou.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1592\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PRINCESS ANNE, MD- (June 8, 2020)- Creating \u201chealthier, more sustainable places to live, work and play\u201d across the country is the goal of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wellconnectedcommunities.extension.org\/\">Well Connected Communities<\/a>&nbsp;Initiative of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwjf.org\/en\/about-rwjf.html\">Robert Wood Johnson Foundation<\/a>.&nbsp; Under the leadership of Dr. Virginie Zoumenou, 1890&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/nutrition-and-health-program\/\">Nutrition and Health Programs<\/a>&nbsp;director, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is the recipient of a $65,000 WAVE 2 competitive WCC sub-grant to continue its efforts to \u201cinitiate the culture of health\u201d in the Tri-County area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three communities on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland (Fruitland, Pocomoke and Princess Anne-Eden) were selected for the initiative.&nbsp; They are among 45 communities across 15 states committed to the project.&nbsp; During the initial grant period, WAVE 1, a community health assessment was conducted, Zoumenou said.&nbsp; Action plans were then developed in each municipality under the leadership of a multi-sector health council and in partnership with youth and adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES\u2019 team helped guide three community-driven projects during WAVE 1 (2017-19):&nbsp; Healthy Street-Healthy Me, Make Fruits Available to All, and Reading and Group Therapy&nbsp;Garden, Zoumenou said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2021\/10\/PART_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2021\/10\/PART_1.jpg 350w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2021\/10\/PART_1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe WAVE 2 project will not only continue the activities in the first initiative, it will also develop further action plans that will help community members strengthen certain skills,\u201d Zoumenou said.&nbsp; \u201cWe believe that increasing skills in home gardening, waste management and food preservation may help improve their food decision-making process and their well-being.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe results of the Well Connected Communities WAVE 1 initiative and the focus of WAVE 2 are important steps toward sustainable projects.
