An historic ferry (1683) connects the three-quarter miles between the two. Bellevue was home to seafood packing plants from 1899-1998. Like many small Eastern Shore towns, it is now fighting gentrification and extreme weather events.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/12\/UMES-Extension-Today-12-2024-1024x800.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11355\" width=\"302\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/12\/UMES-Extension-Today-12-2024-1024x800.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/12\/UMES-Extension-Today-12-2024-300x234.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/12\/UMES-Extension-Today-12-2024-768x600.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/141\/2024\/12\/UMES-Extension-Today-12-2024.jpeg 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>When community leaders reached out to UMES Extension to help organize a STEM experience for youth during the summer, the educators contacted 4-H colleagues at the University of Maryland\u2019s Extension Talbot County office. UMES contributed technical and financial support, while the county extension office provided day-to-day logistical and teaching services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a result, a small team of Bellevue volunteers succeeded in offering an amazing day camp with hands-on activities to about 40 youth who had never participated in a 4-H-connected program before,\u201d said Ariel Clay, the 4-H youth development STEM specialist with UMES Extension. \u201cPlans are already being made for summer 2025, and we hope that this collaborative relationship will result in further programming on a year-round basis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaborations such as this \u201copen doors to create new and innovative programs,\u201d Clay said, since agencies typically work with different communities through varied programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Gail Stephens, agricultural communications, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences, UMES Extension, <\/em><a href=\"mailto:gcstephens@umes.edu\"><em>gcstephens@umes.edu<\/em><\/a><em>, 410-621-3850.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Photos submitted.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UMES Extension 4-H STEM succeeded in making a free, weeklong youth summer science camp available to a historically Black maritime community thanks to a collaboration with its county extension office.
