(photo by Kara Nuzback\/Ag Communications)\" class=\"wp-image-3865 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building The Future U.S. Workforce<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hosted by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nifa.usda.gov\/grants\/programs\/learning-leading-cultivating-next-generation-food-agriculture-professionals-nextgen\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nifa.usda.gov\/grants\/programs\/learning-leading-cultivating-next-generation-food-agriculture-professionals-nextgen\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NextGen<\/span><\/a> program is a collaboration of four universities committed to creating a pipeline for the next generation of professionals in food, agriculture, natural resources and human sciences through leadership development, international experiential learning, outreach and engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Learning to Leading, Cultivating the Next Generation of Food and Agriculture Professionals, or \u201cNextGen\u201d program, enables these institutions to engage, recruit, retain, train and support students interested in Food, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Human Sciences (FANH) careers, which includes the future U.S. Department of Agriculture workforce. This NextGen effort is led by partner institutions: UMES, Florida A&amp;M University, South University A&amp;M College and Kentucky State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project will be primarily carried out through United States and international experiential learning, outreach and engagement programs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NextGen Broad Goals<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image rounded-style\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/trainingsite1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/09\/TGD-NextGENresearchsymposium091925-7483-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"UMES NextGen interns pose for a photo with School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences Dean Dr. Moses T. Kairo and SANS faculty members at the NextGen Research Symposium 2025.\" class=\"wp-image-3871\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Develop and nurture partnerships between the universities and organizations to build the future workforce in FANH and allied disciplines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Establish and maintain effective and responsive outreach and engagement projects including student career development activities, and an understanding of the processes and pathways of federal employment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Develop innovative recruitment, training and retention initiatives, including student scholarship projects and leadership development activities to attract more students to FANH fields.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Design and implement paid, impactful experiential learning projects for students to better understand the wide array of opportunities across the FANH and allied disciplines while developing their professional skills and academic training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title has-background has-header-secondary-bg-color-background-color\">NextGen Summer Research Program<\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\" style=\"border-color:#651d32\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UMES NextGen program is offering paid research internship opportunity to undergraduates this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paid internships ($3,000 stipend + housing + meals) offer opportunities to conduct faculty-mentored research, build oral and written communication skills, attend professional development workshops and seminars, and engage in peer mentoring and networking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students will be required to report their research at the end of summer symposium. These activities will enhance your undergraduate academic experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Program Dates<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UMES NextGen summer research program will run for 10 weeks, from Monday, June 1, 2026 to Friday, Aug. 7, 2026.
