MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Dear Students,

I wanted to take a few moments to thank you for your interest in The Department of Rehabilitation.  For those of you interested in graduate education we are pleased to offer you an opportunity to pursue a Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling (M.S.), on the other hand, if you are interested in an undergraduate degree we also offer you the Bachelors of Science (B.S.), in Rehabilitation Services and the Bachelors of Science (B.S.) in Rehabilitation Psychology.  No matter which option you choose, we feel certain that you will come away with an excellent education.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, careers in the health professions such as rehabilitation are expected to grow at faster than average rates throughout the next decade and beyond.  This means that the job prospects for graduates of either our Master’s program or our Bachelor’s programs can expect to find ample opportunities for exciting career opportunities.

The Master’s Degree program in the Department of Rehabilitation is a 60 Credit hour CACREP (The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) Accredited program which prepares graduates for employment as Rehabilitation Counselors and related occupations in both the public and private sector.  Graduates of this program typically work for the state or federal rehabilitation programs such as the Veterans Administration and the Maryland Division of Rehabilitation, private non-profit entities such as Humanim and private for profit entities.  Other facilities include the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and substance abuse treatment centers such as Hudson Health Services, Inc.

The Undergraduate Degree in Rehabilitation Services is a Bachelors of Science degree (B.S.) that allows students to follow one of two options, either Allied Health or Behavioral.  The Allied Health option prepares students for graduate opportunities in a variety of Allied Health settings including, Rehabilitation Counseling, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and similar fields.  Graduates of this track can also find entry level employment in a number of Allied Health care settings. The Behavioral option prepares students for graduate training in Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling, School Counseling, Addictions Treatment, and a number of related fields.  Graduates of this track can also find entry level employment in a number of behavioral settings such as addictions treatment programs, mental health settings, supported employment settings and intellectual disability service settings.  Each of these options will prepare graduates to enter today’s competitive job market. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Rehabilitation Psychology is primarily designed to prepare students for entry into graduate level psychology study. Graduates of this program will also be prepared for entry level professional positions in a wide variety of human service settings.

The department also offers undergraduate courses in American Sign Language. After successful completion of this course work, students will have an understanding of the Deaf community as well as the ability to interact with Deaf individuals. With this specialized skill set, students can consider job opportunities that allow them to serve the deaf community. These courses will also be a good start for those interested in pursuing training as an interpreter.
