The content and methods of study for this course will vary and are arranged by the student and advisor. Areas of study may include cardiopulmonary, orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, women&#8217;s health, or other fields of study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each student is required to complete&nbsp;3 credits of Independent Study or Electives.&nbsp; In lieu of Independent Study, the student may take electives offered by a graduate school of the University of Maryland System and approved by the faculty advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Examples of Independent Studies<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Summer Camp for Kids with Special Needs<br><\/strong>During the summer of the 2nd year, students volunteer at various summer camps (MD and NC) for kids with special needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wheelchair Basketball<br><\/strong>Students participate in wheelchair basketball activities&nbsp;with wheelchair athletes in Baltimore, MD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clinical Mentoring Program\u00a0at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation &amp; Orthopaedic Institute<br><\/strong>Students are mentored by physical therapists who practice on the\u00a0Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, or\u00a0Cerebrovascular Accident Units\u00a0at this Baltimore hospital (formerly known as Kernan Hospital).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spanish for the Physical Therapist<br><\/strong>During the summer of the 2nd year, the student may&nbsp;attend&nbsp;&#8220;Spanish for the Physical Therapist&#8221; which&nbsp;provides the&nbsp;student with the tools to develop sufficient listening and speaking skills in Spanish in order to perform an assessment of the patient, assess a treatment\u2019s effectiveness, and provide patient education and instruction in exercise and activities of daily living.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sign Language for the Physical Therapist<br><\/strong>During the summer of the 2nd year, the student may&nbsp;register for &#8220;Sign Language for the Physical Therapist&#8221;&nbsp; which provides the student with the tools to develop sufficient communication skills in American Sign Language in order to perform an assessment of a patient, assess a treatment&#8217;s effectiveness, and provide patient education and instruction in exercise and activities of daily living. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PHYT 649 INDEPENDENT STUDY (1-3 Credits)The independent study option provides a means for students to pursue academic interests beyond the scope of course work in the program under the direction of a faculty advisor.
