ADMISSIONS POLICY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Physical Therapy Admissions Committee recommends students to the School of Graduate Studies for admission.  Students must meet the following criteria to gain admission to the DPT Program:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.  Bachelor’s degree from an institution of higher education accredited by one of the six regional accrediting associations in the United States or the degree equivalent in another country is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.  All applicants must successfully complete the following prerequisite courses with a grade of \u201cC\u201d or higher. All prerequisite coursework must be completed at an accredited college\/university in the United States or Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.  An overall 3.0 grade point average in all course work attempted and 3.0 average in the science courses attempted that are a prerequisite to the program (including any courses taken during the spring and the summer preceding fall admission).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Graduate Record Examination \u2013 required.  PTCAS\/department code is 3698. Each applicant’s score will be assessed individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.  Demonstration of knowledge concerning the physical therapy profession by submitting documentation of first-hand observation and\/or work experience related to the practice of physical therapy.  This experience must be substantiated in writing by a licensed physical therapist. It is required that the experiences be at two different types of clinical settings with a minimum of 25 hours in each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.  Submission of three (3) letters of recommendation addressing both the applicant’s moral character and potential as a physical therapist. See PTCAS for details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7.  An interview with at least one member of the Physical Therapy Admissions Committee is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8.  Prerequisite science courses must be completed within 10 years of the expected matriculation year.  For example, if the student expects to begin the program in 2018, then the science prerequisite courses must have been completed after 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to certain factors (ie: number of available clinical sites), the number of qualified students who can be accepted into the DPT Program is limited.  The Physical Therapy Admissions Committee will consider such criteria as overall GPA, mathematics and science GPA, GRE, prior experiences related to the practice of physical therapy, the personal interview, and the missions of the university and the program in making its decision for admission.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ACCEPTANCE POLICY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon acceptance to the DPT Program, the student will be notified and be given two weeks to return their statement of intent. If the student accepts the offer of admission:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.  The student must return the signed statement of intent along with a non-refundable acceptance fee.  On admission, this acceptance fee will be credited toward tuition.
2.  The student must provide official transcripts from all schools attended to the School of Graduate Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TRANSFER OF CREDIT AND ADVANCED STANDING POLICY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UMES Department of Physical Therapy program will not accept transfer credits or grant admission with advanced standing.  All students, regardless of prior academic training, must apply through the same application process and start the program from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
