2020 Outstanding Service Award – Russell Rothschild

Russell Rothschild, 2020 Outstanding Service Award

On May 6, 2020, the UMES Department of Physical Therapy recognized Mr. Russell Rothschild for over 25 years of service to the program as an adjunct instructor. Rothschild is a board certified prosthetist by the American Board for Certifications in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics. The department is extremely grateful to Mr. Rothschild for sharing his expertise and specialized skills in manufacturing prosthetic and orthotics devices with students studying to become physical therapists.

Rothschild graduated from Villanova University in 1986 with his Bachelor of Science. “This was never work for me, it’s been a part of my life and I love it.” In 1977, Rothschild’s father began their family business Rothschild Orthopedics. His father’s left leg was amputated below the knee while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. “My childhood helped shape me and my love for this.” Rothschild recollects most of his childhood being spent in the shop with his siblings and father. Later on, Mr. Rothschild attended and graduated from Florida International University in 1990 with his Bachelor of Science in Prosthetics & Orthotics

In 1993, Russell joined UMES as an adjunct faculty member in the Physical Therapy Department. For the last 27 years, he has been teaching PHYT 631, Prosthetics & Orthotics. Rothschild continues to teach physical therapy students the fundamentals of Prosthetics & Orthotics. “They don’t change, even though technology does. It’s always a joy to share the fundamental information with students who are always energetic and ready to learn.”

Mr. Rothschild is truly appreciative of this honor. “I am very thankful simply for the opportunity, especially at such a young age, the department took a chance on me. The blessing is mine.” Russell also stated that it has been a pleasure to work as an adjunct instructor because of the people in the physical therapy department and their dedication to the program. “This entire department is great. I’ve seen a huge turnaround from equipment to opportunities, change all for the good.”

Congratulations Mr. Rothschild and thank you for over 25 years of service to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
