{"id":2842,"date":"2016-07-19T13:06:09","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T17:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=2842"},"modified":"2021-09-24T13:16:29","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T17:16:29","slug":"delmarva-power-announces-1m-gift-to-umes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/delmarva-power-announces-1m-gift-to-umes\/","title":{"rendered":"Delmarva Power announces $1M gift to UMES"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"529\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Green-Collar-Initiative.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Green-Collar-Initiative.jpeg 529w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Green-Collar-Initiative-300x272.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday, July 19, 2016<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRINCESS ANNE, MD<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; (July 19, 2016) &#8211; Delmarva Power, an Exelon Company, announced today it is pledging $1 million to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to help the land-grant institution expand training a sustainable workforce with emphases on agriculture and renewable energy in the company&#8217;s Maryland service area.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gift will be used by UMES to launch the Green Collar Initiative, a series of energy conservation projects that include crafting a \u201csustainable curriculum\u201d using research, development and training assistance targeting rural businesspeople, especially those in agribusiness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy educating students and the existing workforce in renewable energy &#8211; solar and passive solar, geothermal and related technologies &#8211; the university will help build a green workforce that is knowledgeable about energy preservation &#8211; and committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability,\u201d said John Allen, Regional Vice President for Delmarva Power, and chairman of UMES&#8217; Board of Visitors. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis gift will support the company&#8217;s commitment to workforce development within its service area,\u201d Allen said. \u201cGrowing jobs, especially &#8216;green jobs,&#8217; within Delmarva Power&#8217;s Maryland region will benefit the people whose skills will be enhanced &#8211; and the communities we serve.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The $1 million gift from Delmarva Power is the single largest from a business or corporation in university history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allen and his utility company colleagues joined UMES President Juliette B. Bell in making the announcement at the university&#8217;s Engineering &amp; Aviation Science Complex, the newest classroom building that incorporates many of the latest green-energy features in its design.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among projects UMES will undertake: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Provide \u201cgreen\u201d training opportunities through a certificate program for students and the existing workforce with an emphasis on the latest developments in \u201crenewable energy solutions,\u201d including solar, geothermal and related technologies.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Keep public attention focused on the Green Collar Initiative long-term by deploying a \u201cmobile transfer substation\u201d that will visit schools and community colleges on recruiting outings, much the way libraries utilize bookmobiles.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Design and build a \u201cgreen power\u201d model home on campus utilizing such energy conservation strategies as radiant floor heating, energy-efficient appliances, permeable paving and low \/ dual flush bathroom fixtures. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dwelling will serve as a teaching tool by incorporating \u201csustainable\u201d technology and design elements endorsed by the U.S. Green Building Council.
