{"id":2144,"date":"2020-06-23T07:49:10","date_gmt":"2020-06-23T11:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=2144"},"modified":"2023-06-26T15:20:52","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T19:20:52","slug":"does-grazing-impact-organic-crops-negatively","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/does-grazing-impact-organic-crops-negatively\/","title":{"rendered":"Does grazing impact organic crops negatively?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Fawzy-Hashem-web-final.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Fawzy-Hashem-web-final.jpg 350w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Fawzy-Hashem-web-final-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Fawzy-Hashem-web-final-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Dr. Fawzy Hashem<\/strong><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trio of UMES researchers are part of a nationwide food safety study<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday, June 23, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A University of Maryland Eastern Shore research team will share $1 million in federal funding with three partner institutions to gauge how cover-crop grazing by livestock affects soil quality in fields alternately used to grow organic consumer crops.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The money is part of a $9.5 million package of grants the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently awarded to 11 collaborative, multi-state projects to \u201cenhance the competitiveness of (domestic) specialty crops.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES, in partnership with the University of California at Davis, the University of Minnesota, The Organic Center in Washington, D.C. and the USDA&#8217;s Agriculture Research Station in Beltsville, Md. will \u201cinvestigate the benefits of livestock integration through cover-crop grazing on bacterial population dynamics, food safety, and soil and environmental health,\u201d said Dr. Fawzy Hashem, a research associate professor in the university&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/Agriculture\/\"><strong>Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany growers and scientists consider livestock grazing with winter cover crop management in fresh produce or other agronomically important crop operations as a good approach to enhance soil health and benefit the environment by increasing carbon inputs,\u201d Hashem said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt also can be helpful,\u201d Hashem said, \u201cin improving nutrient cycling, reducing dependence on external inputs, improving soil health and diversifying profit streams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/sheep-grazing-web-final.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/sheep-grazing-web-final.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/sheep-grazing-web-final-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practice, however, raises questions about food safety risks involved.&nbsp; This, Hashem said, is where the study steps in to address the need for \u201cresearch examining food pathogen persistence, survival in soil and (whether harmful bacteria can) transfer to vegetable crops.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hashem and fellow researchers will graze sheep in fields with cover crops prior to planting spinach and cucumber.&nbsp; They will measure changes in soil health indicators over two years of grazed cover-crop \/ vegetable production in Maryland, California and Minnesota and assess benefits and potential trade-offs of vegetable cash crop productivity.&nbsp; Results will be compared to fields planted in tilled cover crops and a fallow field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joining Hashem, the joint project&#8217;s co-principal director and the mid-Atlantic region&#8217;s principal director, are colleagues Drs. Salina Parveen, professor of UMES&#8217; Food Science and Technology program; E.
