Event supports the Silver Star Scholarship fund<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

George Owings, Maryland’s Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and Anthony S. Sarbanes, a Salisbury native who served three decades in the U.S. Army, are the featured speakers at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s 2019 Veterans’ Day banquet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Friday, Nov. 8, event gets underway with a 6 p.m. cocktail reception at the Richard A. Henson Center on the UMES campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university is partnering with the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce to salute military veterans with a gourmet meal prepared by UMES hospitality and tourism management students under the supervision of chef Ralston Whittingham. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Individual tickets for the event are $50. Corporate sponsorships for a table of eight are $500. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proceeds will support UMES’ \u201cSilver Star Scholarship,\u201d a fund that provides financial support for eligible first-year and transfer students who are veterans or a child of a member of the military. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of their hands-on college experience, UMES students planned the menu and will prepare the meal for the patriotic-themed program.  Following a champagne toast to veterans, dinner will feature crab and spinach chicken parcel along with a lemon sorbet, a pineapple and cauliflower duet and baked Alaska with raspberry sauce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owings is a former U.S. Marine and decorated Vietnam veteran who served 17 years in the Maryland House of Delegates.  His appointment by Gov. Larry Hogan is his second stint in the state agency; he previously served during Gov. Bob Ehrlich’s administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarbanes, a retired Wicomico County educator, served two years of active duty in the U.S. Army following his 1958 graduation from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel), where he was commissioned a second lieutenant after completing the Reserve Officer Training Corp program.  He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in September 1991 after 33 years of service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
