Members of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s School of Agriculture and Natural Sciences visited the Bahamas Agricultural and Marine Science Institute to explore a potential partnership between the two institutions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

A\u00a0mid-winter\u00a0trip to the\u00a0island country of The Bahamas was\u00a0no beach getaway for\u00a0the\u00a0faculty\u00a0from\u00a0the University\u00a0of Maryland\u00a0Eastern Shore.\u00a0Instead,\u00a0the delegation\u00a0from the\u00a0School of Natural Sciences spent\u00a0their\u00a0time\u00a0building\u00a0an educational\u00a0collaboration\u00a0with\u00a0the Bahamas\u00a0Agriculture and Marine Science\u00a0Institute.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit was to facilitate a partnership between the two institutions that offers BAMSI students the potential to earn a UMES degree after earning their associate degree, while UMES students could potentially study abroad in The Bahamas.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt its core, this partnership in the Bahamas focuses on student progression and academic continuity,\u201d said Phillip Broussard<\/strong>, Interim Director of the Center for International Education at UMES. \u201cThis would establish a framework that allows students to begin their academic journey in The Bahamas and advance seamlessly into degree completion and professional preparation through clearly defined pathways.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Topics of discussion included opportunities for faculty exchanges, graduate student engagement, shared research initiatives, and veterinary and agricultural collaborations. <\/p>\n\n\n

During the tour, UMES faculty observed how BAMSI students worked with unique resources in their environment. It\u2019s why Dr. Jonathan Cumming<\/strong>, chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, is an advocate of the partnership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cummings\u00a0explained that when he was a boy,\u00a0his father\u00a0challenged him\u00a0to carve a spoon from wood using a knife.\u00a0Cummings\u00a0remembered\u00a0that moment as a lesson in patience\u00a0and respect for\u00a0nature.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u00a0is how partnerships should be built,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cYou begin with what exists,\u00a0then\u00a0you listen carefully. You move deliberately. When you honor the process, something lasting takes shape.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UMES\/BAMSI\u00a0visit also highlighted\u00a0a pre-veterinary education\u00a0component\u00a0rooted\u00a0in the \u201cOne Health,\u201d a medical approach described by the American\u00a0Veterinary Medical Association as\u00a0a recognition\u00a0of the connection between the health of humans,\u00a0animals\u00a0and the environment.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0widely\u00a0followed concept encourages research\u00a0by medical professionals to achieve the best outcomes for all living organisms.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Kimberly Braxton<\/strong>, an associate professor in SANS\u2019 Department of Agriculture, Food, and Resource Sciences, returned to the Shore with clear inspiration from the BAMSI visit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing able to experience what BAMSI has to offer has reinforced my passion for teaching and being able to share the enthusiasm for agriculture at both UMES and BAMSI,\u201d she said. \u201cI look forward to seeing this partnership flourish in all aspects.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\u00a0BAMSI\/UMES partnership\u00a0is expected\u00a0to\u00a0provide broader educational and research opportunities beyond the natural sciences.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
