two institutions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A\u00a0mid-winter\u00a0trip to the\u00a0island country of The Bahamas was\u00a0no beach getaway for\u00a0the\u00a0faculty\u00a0from\u00a0the University\u00a0of Maryland\u00a0Eastern Shore.\u00a0Instead,\u00a0the delegation\u00a0from the\u00a0School of Natural Sciences spent\u00a0their\u00a0time\u00a0building\u00a0an educational\u00a0collaboration\u00a0with\u00a0the Bahamas\u00a0Agriculture and Marine Science\u00a0Institute.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit was&nbsp;to&nbsp;facilitate&nbsp;a partnership between the two institutions&nbsp;that&nbsp;offers&nbsp;BAMSI students the potential to earn a UMES degree after earning their associate degree, while UMES students could potentially study abroad in The Bahamas.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt its core,&nbsp;this&nbsp;partnership in the Bahamas focuses&nbsp;on student progression and academic continuity,\u201d said&nbsp;<strong>Phillip Broussard<\/strong>, Interim Director of the Center for International Education at UMES. \u201cThis would&nbsp;establish&nbsp;a framework that allows students to begin their academic journey in The Bahamas and advance seamlessly into degree completion and professional preparation through clearly defined pathways.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topics of discussion included opportunities for faculty exchanges, graduate student engagement, shared research initiatives, and veterinary and agricultural collaborations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" February.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the tour, UMES faculty&nbsp;observed&nbsp;how&nbsp;BAMSI students&nbsp;worked with&nbsp;unique&nbsp;resources&nbsp;in their&nbsp;environment.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;why Dr.&nbsp;<strong>Jonathan&nbsp;Cumming<\/strong>,&nbsp;chair of the&nbsp;Department&nbsp;of Natural Sciences,&nbsp;is&nbsp;an&nbsp;advocate&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;partnership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cummings\u00a0explained that when he was a boy,\u00a0his father\u00a0challenged him\u00a0to carve a spoon from wood using a knife.\u00a0Cummings\u00a0remembered\u00a0that moment as a lesson in patience\u00a0and respect for\u00a0nature.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u00a0is how partnerships should be built,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cYou begin with what exists,\u00a0then\u00a0you listen carefully. You move deliberately.
