The program\u2019s first cohort began in October 2025 and runs through Aug. 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe program is a unique one, especially among Historically Black Colleges and Universities, to help develop the next generation of leaders,\u201d Allen said. \u201cThis is also a great opportunity to help department chairs get the support they need in helping implement departmental initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"921\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Amy-again-e1773851603640-921x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15783\" style=\"width:213px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Amy-again-e1773851603640-921x1024.jpg 921w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Amy-again-e1773851603640-270x300.jpg 270w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Amy-again-e1773851603640-768x854.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Amy-again-e1773851603640.jpg 938w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 921px) 100vw, 921px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Amy Hagenrater is the Assistant Chair in the Department of English, Languages, and Media Studies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allen said the impetus of the program was inspired by his time as the dean of the School of Pharmacy &amp; Health Professions, where he had to fill a department chair vacancy. With no succession plan in place, this led to the shuffling of positions and the creation of vacancies at others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the inaugural cohort were handpicked by their respective department chairs, with each member serving in the position between one and two years, at the chair\u2019s discretion. Each member in the program also receives a stipend and a course release for the Spring 2026 semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s cohort, 16 in all, ranges from a number of departments across the institutions\u2019 four undergraduate schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the roles and responsibilities for the assistant chairs may include working with faculty on essential policy revisions, department-related event planning, dealing with student degree audits and supporting their respective chairs in the accreditation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department of English, Languages &amp; Media Studies (ELMS) faculty member Dr. <strong>Amy Hagenrater<\/strong> will serve as the assistant chair under interim chair Dr. <strong>Cynthia Cravens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"886\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Joel-Tomlinson-Bio-Pic-scaled-e1773851569753-1024x886.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15782\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.1558004285277013;width:251px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Joel-Tomlinson-Bio-Pic-scaled-e1773851569753-1024x886.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Joel-Tomlinson-Bio-Pic-scaled-e1773851569753-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Joel-Tomlinson-Bio-Pic-scaled-e1773851569753-768x665.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Joel-Tomlinson-Bio-Pic-scaled-e1773851569753-1536x1329.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/Joel-Tomlinson-Bio-Pic-scaled-e1773851569753.jpg 1770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Joel Tomlinson, Assistant Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hagenrater, who has been at UMES since 2009, said she was honored to be chosen for the newly created role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m touched to be considered for this,\u201d she said. \u201cIn our department, we pioneer creative areas in our discipline, and beyond that, in outreach in the University, and that\u2019s the innovation we want to continue to provide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, participating in the program is <strong>Joel Tomlinson<\/strong>, who is the assistant chair in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering Technology.
