(Joey Gardner photo).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frederick emphasized the importance of HBCUs as incubators of leaders, as well as a number of players in the role of the development and growth of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe compound interest of their decades-long impact is felt in both places seen and unseen, known and unknown, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES President <strong>Heidi M. Anderson<\/strong> said Frederick\u2019s background in African American studies and religion made her the perfect fit to launch this year\u2019s programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHistory and religion are intertwined,\u201d Dr. Anderson said. \u201cUMES was founded with the Methodist church. So, to kick off Black History Month with Dr. Frederick is so powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frederick added that having insight into the roles and responsibilities of what an HBCU can do is essential to understanding black history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe work of HBCUs has long been to create generations of leaders who not only excel in their work, but understand who they are,\u201d she said. \u201cA people, without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture, is like a tree without roots.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Marla Frederick opened the University of Maryland Eastern Shore\u2019s 2026 Black History Month activities with an address on several topics focusing on the African American experience.
