Following her playing days, she also took on a new role on the volleyball court \u2013 this time as a graduate assistant coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two years later, Abner is on the verge of receiving her master\u2019s on <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/umes-28th-winter-commencement-set-for-dec-13\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"15657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saturday during UMES\u2019 28<sup>th<\/sup> Winter Commencement<\/a> at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The moment was one that she was immensely appreciative of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has shown me how far I\u2019ve come and where I\u2019ve come from,\u201d she said. \u201cBeing able to play ball at the level I did, getting two degrees, and being the first in my family to get my master\u2019s, I have a lot of thankfulness and gratefulness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abner\u2019s path to volleyball started as a high schooler when she fell in love and found her competitive edge through the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love team sports and the game just came easy to me,\u201d she said. \u201cIt allowed me to be around a lot of people who helped foster my love for the game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her interest in psychology came from a challenging childhood that included seeing her mother battle and overcome addiction. Through those experiences, Abner became immersed in the importance of good mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaving a strong mental fortitude and mental focus was huge in helping me get to where I am,\u201d she said. \u201cPsychology was something that just stuck with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following graduation, Abner plans to work as a licensed counselor while also coaching club volleyball, continuing the two things that played an important role in her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summing up her experience at UMES, Abner goes by her own personal mantra, \u201cfaith, greater than fear,\u201d something which she said defined her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt means whatever I believe in or put my mind to is achievable,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not that there\u2019s an absence of fear, it\u2019s that with my faith, I can be courageous, be strong in my beliefs, and accomplish anything I desire to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Derionah Abner began looking at schools to continue her college volleyball career, she also wanted to find a place where she could pursue a degree in psychology.
