Hytche Athletic Center on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ebony Jenkins<\/strong> of Snow Hill completed her journey of being a triple graduate from the institution as she received her doctorate in food and agricultural science. Jenkins, whose research on edible insects was <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/for-the-media\/news-releases\/umes-doctoral-students-research-featured-in-pbs-nova-documentary\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/for-the-media\/news-releases\/umes-doctoral-students-research-featured-in-pbs-nova-documentary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">featured on the PBS series \u201cNOVA\u201d<\/a>, said her decision to study insects as a food source was a personal one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy son suffers from asthma and allergies,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, when I found out that honey, specifically locally sourced honey, could combat asthma and allergies, I knew I had to cast my fears aside in order to push forward and work with insects.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4717-scaled-e1702754225846.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14838\" width=\"122\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4717-scaled-e1702754225846.jpg 883w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4717-scaled-e1702754225846-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4717-scaled-e1702754225846-827x1024.jpg 827w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4717-scaled-e1702754225846-768x952.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 122px) 100vw, 122px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Abdul-Hakeem Kargbo <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Jenkins, who plans to create her own business focusing on insects as a renewable food source, said while her goal wasn\u2019t what she initially envisioned, she is glad she followed this path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf an opportunity is given to you, try it,\u201d she said. \u201cYou never know if you might like it. Sometimes, you might end up liking it better than your original plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following in the footsteps of his brother Hamza, who graduated in 2021, Abdul-Hakeem wanted to emulate his parents \u2014 who are nurses \u2014 in helping others. He\u2019s also been a presence <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/its-going-to-be-our-comeback-year\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13725\" target=\"_blank\">in both the \u201cThunderin\u2019 Hawks\u201d pep band<\/a>, and the gospel choir, often leading the groups in the place of director, <strong>Stephen Pender<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>Abdul-Hakeem Kargbo<\/strong> of Clinton, Maryland, who received his bachelor of science in rehabilitation psychology, commencement was a bittersweet moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt makes me feel appreciated that he would trust me to have this type of responsibility for something of this magnitude,\u201d said Kargbo, who plans to return to UMES in the spring to pursue his master\u2019s degree in rehabilitation counseling. \u201cFor him to be able to trust me has helped me grow as a person. It also allowed me to implement what I\u2019ve learned from this experience in my everyday life, even my schoolwork and responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4720-scaled-e1702754192976.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14839\" width=\"119\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4720-scaled-e1702754192976.jpg 883w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4720-scaled-e1702754192976-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4720-scaled-e1702754192976-827x1024.jpg 827w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/IMG_4720-scaled-e1702754192976-768x952.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 119px) 100vw, 119px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Dawrae Gibbons<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Dawrae Gibbons<\/strong> of Salisbury worked in law enforcement before deciding to major in English at UMES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally from Bermuda, Gibbons made an impact in the Department of English and Modern Languages, becoming a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, and working in UMES\u2019s writing center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy biggest accomplishment was proving to myself that I could do this,\u201d said Gibbons, who wants to teach college-level English one day. \u201cI\u2019m an international student and not your typical student because I decided to come back to school later in life.
