(Photo by Todd Dudek, UMES Agriculture Communication Photographer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a celebration for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as the much-anticipated opening of its new School of Pharmacy and Health Professions building became official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The facility, constructed on the continually developing and growing east side of the UMES Campus, was christened by President <strong>Heidi M. Anderson<\/strong>, School of Pharmacy and Health Professions staff and faculty, University System of Maryland Chancellor <strong>Jay Perman,<\/strong> and Board of Regents chairperson <strong>Linda Gooden<\/strong>, and numerous state officials with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis (project) has been a labor of love for me and my colleagues, for the past five years,\u201d Anderson, UMES\u2019s 16<sup>th<\/sup> president, said as she addressed the group of civic members, faculty, alumni, and current students. \u201cThis phase one building will enhance the capacity of UMES to teach and deliver critical health services, but it is also an important new resource for the community as we \u2013 together \u2013 address rural health disparities and determine how to best deliver services to our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction of the $90 million, 125,000-square-foot building began in late 2019 following the announcement <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/lawmakers-greenlight-new-umes-health-professions-building\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1732\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of a $10 million allocation by the Maryland General Assembly<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/04\/TD2-NewPharmacy-042823-7989-805x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14378\" width=\"263\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/04\/TD2-NewPharmacy-042823-7989-805x1024.jpg 805w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/04\/TD2-NewPharmacy-042823-7989-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/04\/TD2-NewPharmacy-042823-7989-768x977.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/04\/TD2-NewPharmacy-042823-7989-1208x1536.jpg 1208w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/04\/TD2-NewPharmacy-042823-7989-1610x2048.jpg 1610w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/04\/TD2-NewPharmacy-042823-7989-scaled.jpg 2013w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">University of Maryland Eastern Shore President Heidi M. (Photo by Todd Dudek, UMES Agriculture Communication Photographer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opening of the facility is the next step in concentrating the university\u2019s nine health programs and six academic departments \u2014 kinesiology, physical therapy, physician assistant, rehabilitation services, pharmaceutical sciences, and pharmacy practice &amp; administration \u2014 in one location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all, UMES has the most health professions programs among all Historically Black Colleges and Universities nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anderson said that as a pharmacist, the new facility holds \u201cspecial meaning\u201d to her, while also helping advance the goal of helping UMES students prepare to address the most pressing health issues of the day, especially for rural communities in areas of the Eastern Shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the students in SPHP programs are actively involved with faculty and community initiatives to improve the health and well-being of citizens, which include the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines through clinics for Somerset County citizens as well as collaborations with TidalHealth and other community organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese cutting-edge facilities will give our students the opportunity to soar above and beyond toward anything they want to accomplish in the future,\u201d said Dr. <strong>T. Sean Vasaitis<\/strong>, the acting dean of the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. \u201cBut that future does require the completion of our learning complex. As you tour this building, do notice that there are very specialized spaces \u2026 because this building was always meant to be part of a larger complex.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aforementioned \u201cphase one\u201d of the complex features a state-of-the-art facility containing classrooms, offices, research laboratories, a community and hospital pharmacy practice space, and simulation laboratories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This learning environment will house the pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences programs while accommodating interprofessional activities with UMES\u2019s allied health programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase two of the project, which will follow after funds are secured, will not only include simulation laboratories, classrooms, and collaborative spaces for the university\u2019s physical therapy, physician assistant, rehabilitation, and kinesiology programs but would also house a proposed School of Veterinary Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the completion of the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the east portion of the campus continues to see significant development and growth that started nearly a decade ago with the construction of the nearby Engineering and Aviation Sciences Complex in 2016, and will continue with the construction of UMES\u2019s new Agricultural Research and Education Center, set for a groundbreaking ceremony this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The complex will not only help steer the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions toward fulfilling its mission of preparing healthcare professionals and advocates to lead change in the field through interprofessional education, research, and service on the local, state, national and global levels but also continue to help move towards more interdisciplinary interaction, which is an essential goal to Anderson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is critical as it will bring all of our other health professions programs together to foster the kind of synergies that are necessary to deliver 21st-century health care,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was a celebration for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as the much-anticipated opening of its new School of Pharmacy and Health Professions building became official.
