It\u2019s fun and exhilarating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanders was one of eight UMES students who participated in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge program, which returned after a brief hiatus due to several influences, including COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s team, coached <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/umes-alum-holland-named-as-new-pr-director\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by public relations director <strong>Earl Holland Jr<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Kawanda McCarthy-Williams,<\/strong> the Assistant Dean for Experiential Education and an assistant professor in the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions, was comprised of nine students &#8211; eight freshmen and one junior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UMES has participated in the quiz bowl competition involving HBCUs from across the country since the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge\u2019s inception in 1989. Over the years, the university has received more than $130,000 in grants from the Honda Motor Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the year, the students participated in twice-weekly practices and a campus tournament open to all undergraduate students, and virtual scrimmages against other HBCUs to prepare for competition in one of six regional qualifying tournaments featuring schools from around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, UMES competed in Honda\u2019s National Qualifying Tournament hosted by Bowie State University in late February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During that tournament, the Hawk quizzers matched wits with HBCU foes in a field of competition including Morgan State University, Howard University, Lincoln University, Cheyney University, Georgia-based Albany State University, Bowie State, and eventual tournament champion, the University of the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor these students to fare so well being majority freshmen and without having a template to follow really impressed me,\u201d said Holland, who was a member of the team from 2001 to 2005 and a member <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/hcasc\/umes-savors-high-finish-in-challenge\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/hcasc\/umes-savors-high-finish-in-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of UMES\u2019 national runner-up team in 2004<\/a>. \u201cGoing into the tournament, we tried to keep the environment light while letting them know that with the right focus, they could compete with anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/03\/HCASC-NQT-UMES.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14246\" width=\"354\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/03\/HCASC-NQT-UMES.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/03\/HCASC-NQT-UMES-300x193.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 354px) 100vw, 354px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Members of the UMES Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team huddle before their match-up with the University of the District of Columbia at the Bowie State NQT, held on Feb. 25.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>UMES fielded two squads in the scholastic competition, with the varsity squad comprised of Sanders and fellow freshmen, <strong>Kailey Wilson<\/strong>, <strong>Kevin Armstrong II<\/strong>, and <strong>Calvin Awkward<\/strong>, who was captain<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The junior varsity squad featured freshmen <strong>Andrew Boaston<\/strong>, <strong>Omarion Lopez<\/strong>, <strong>Russell Berry<\/strong>, also a team captain, and junior <strong>Quinton Smith<\/strong>. Freshman manager <strong>Easla Wescott<\/strong> rounded out the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awkward, a computer science major, said during his experience at the tournament he was surprised by how large of involvement there was in the quiz competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of schools that are a part of it. It\u2019s a lot bigger than I thought it was,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The varsity team went 1-3 in round-robin competition, wrapping up play with a 250-220 victory against York College of Queens, New York. The junior varsity was competitive despite being unable to secure a win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Falling short of its goal to clinch a berth in Honda\u2019s National Championship Tournament in Los Angeles next month, Holland and the rest of the team took the disappointment in stride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing a new program, we knew that this year was the year to get our sea legs, so to speak,\u201d he said. \u201cWith a year under our belts and with the ability to grow the program, we\u2019re looking to create consistent long-term success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For more information on the UMES Honda Campus All-Star Challenge program, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/hcasc\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/hcasc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">umes.edu\/hcasc<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Princaya Sanders was in a situation that would test anyone\u2019s mettle.
