Hytche Athletic Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nu Delta chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho recently celebrated its 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary at UMES with a variety of events that took place during this year\u2019s homecoming festivities on campus. The organization placed second in the sorority portion of the homecoming step show as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, among that charter group of 16 members in 1992 was <strong>Lisa Musgrove<\/strong>, who was a close friend of another member in the middle of the process. It was through that friend that she met fellow aspiring pledges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were in the same major and she just told me to come to her house, and I met the other ladies that were interested, and what was so awesome was that they took the time to get to know me,\u201d she said. \u201cI took the time to get to know them and we actually prayed for the men and women who were in the (Persian) Gulf War at the time and that let me know that they were really rooted and based in Christian principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat showed me that they just weren\u2019t saying it, they were really about it. So, I was hooked after that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 30th-anniversary celebration of the Nu Delta chapter also coincided with the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the sorority\u2019s founding on Nov. 12. Sigma Gamma Rho holds the distinction of being the only one of the four African-American sororities of the \u201cDivine Nine\u201d that was not founded at Howard University, as it was founded at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. LaKeisha Harris<\/strong>, the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at UMES and one of the on-campus advisors for the Nu Delta chapter, has been involved with Sigma Gamma Rho since she crossed as a 19-year-old student at Bowie State University in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harris had the opportunity to attend the Centennial Boule or council meeting, this summer in Indianapolis and at Butler where a new monument was unveiled honoring the founders of Sigma Gamma Rho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis summer, it was all about celebration,\u201d she said. \u201cCelebrating our founders, taking a trip, and literally walking in their footsteps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the charter members of the Nu Delta chapter is something that has a special place in their hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/1-DSC_0739-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13903\" width=\"835\" height=\"555\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/1-DSC_0739-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/1-DSC_0739-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/1-DSC_0739-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/1-DSC_0739-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/1-DSC_0739-2048x1363.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 835px) 100vw, 835px\" \/><figcaption>Members of the charter class of 1992 and past members of the Nu Delta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho pose for a photo in front of Hartford Hall during Homecoming 2022 festivities.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m at loss for words and that\u2019s not normal for me at all because I\u2019m normally the one that has something to say,\u201d Millberry said. \u201cIt\u2019s the spirit that\u2019s over us celebrating not only 100 years of sisterhood, scholarship, and service but knowing that we\u2019ve been here on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd to know that we were all a part of that it just is a feeling that comes over me that I just can\u2019t describe right now.
