She was interested in giving back to where she lived in Bowie, Md.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love it there, and I thought, I have extra time, maybe I should volunteer and I thought, what would I like to volunteer doing?\u201d Barrett-Gaines said. \u201cI like parks, and there\u2019s parks in my neighborhood and parks in my community. You know, I\u2019ll pick up trash \u2026 I\u2019ll do something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/09\/Kathryn-Barrett-Gaines-2022-summer.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13656\" width=\"205\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/09\/Kathryn-Barrett-Gaines-2022-summer.jpg 303w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/09\/Kathryn-Barrett-Gaines-2022-summer-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><figcaption>UMES professor Dr. Kathryn Barrett-Gaines<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a visit to the Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission\u2019s website, she saw the opportunity to put her expertise in African history and culture to use at the Marietta House Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her role at the Marietta House, Barrett-Gaines will be on-site at the museum this semester while teaching her UMES courses remotely as she conducts her research interpreting the African roots of the diaspora at the Marietta House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Prince George\u2019s County Parks and Recreation website, the mission of the museum is to explore, elevate, and transform awareness of the interconnected relationships of the people and their descendants who lived and labored at the former tobacco plantation and family home of former U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Gabriel Duvall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barrett-Gaines said. \u201cBut what (these museums are) doing is that they\u2019re not focusing on the white people that lived there, they\u2019re focusing on the enslaved. That\u2019s the way these museums are being pivoted and it\u2019s a really cool thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/09\/Marietta_House_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/09\/Marietta_House_1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/09\/Marietta_House_1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>The Marietta House Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you take a tour of Marietta House and you take a tour of the enslaved people\u2019s life, it\u2019s amazing, and it\u2019s sobering, and it brings tears to your eyes the way they bring you through and show you this \u2026 it\u2019s like thank goodness this is where we are now in the 21st century.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barrett-Gaines said having the opportunity to be a visiting scholar at the museum not only allows her to take a historical look at her community but will provide opportunities to UMES students as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarietta House and other museums, they\u2019re very excited about a pipeline between HBCUs in Maryland\u2026because a lot of times these opportunities go to University of Maryland College Park Students, even Bowie State \u2026 but to have a pipeline to our students is a big opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How often does an interest in volunteering end up leading to a job opportunity?
