{"id":13102,"date":"2022-03-05T18:57:23","date_gmt":"2022-03-05T23:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=13102"},"modified":"2022-03-23T14:40:26","modified_gmt":"2022-03-23T19:40:26","slug":"luck-is-the-residue-of-hard-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/luck-is-the-residue-of-hard-work\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Luck is the residue of hard work \u2026\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/Jeffrey-Hsai-2022-spelling-bee-champion.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13103\" width=\"292\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/Jeffrey-Hsai-2022-spelling-bee-champion.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/Jeffrey-Hsai-2022-spelling-bee-champion-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Jeffrey Hsia<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The first word Jeffrey Hsia was challenged to spell at the 2022 Maryland Eastern Shore Regional Spelling Bee was &#8216;lucky.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It proved a harbinger of good things to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeffrey, an eighth grader at Bennett Middle School in Salisbury, won the competition and earned an automatic invitation to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee during the week of Memorial Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He won the event spelling &#8216;likelihood&#8217; correctly.&nbsp; All told, he nailed 13 words on his way to winning the keepsake medallion awarded to the winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was very happy, and so proud,\u201d Jeffrey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ariana Miah of Pemberton Elementary School, also in Salisbury, was the runner-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the second time Jeffrey qualified for the competition sponsored by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.&nbsp; In 2019, he represented Fruitland Intermediate School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bennett Middle, Jeffrey said, held its school-level bee a week prior to the event at UMES, so he estimated he had five days to study the word guide each regional bee qualifier receives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At home, Jeffrey and his family also speak Mandarin.&nbsp; His father, Victor, said as a young child spelling was a challenge for Jeffrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are very proud of him,\u201d his father said.&nbsp; \u201cHe works very hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeffrey said he was motivated \u201cto learn to spell new words correctly so I can do a good job on writing (school) papers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/Ariana-Miah-2022-spelling-bee-runner-up.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13104\" width=\"213\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/Ariana-Miah-2022-spelling-bee-runner-up.jpg 376w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/Ariana-Miah-2022-spelling-bee-runner-up-183x300.jpg 183w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Ariana Miah<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m meticulous about using correct words,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Bennett Middle, Jeffrey performs with the school band and orchestra; he plays violin, \u201csome trombone\u201d and base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spelling bees are a solo act, however, and Jeffrey acknowledged having sweaty palms as the bee got underway.&nbsp; He said he calmed himself by focusing on spelling the words his fellow competitors were presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, only Jeffrey and Ariana were left sitting on the stage of the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They went back and forth for six rounds before Ariana misspelled &#8216;pattypan,&#8217;<strong>* <\/strong>and Jeffrey was poised to win the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When word pronouncer Marilyn Buerkle said &#8216;likelihood,&#8217; Jeffrey confided he was confident he knew how to spell it and drew on his routine of not blurting out a response.  He calmly executed the spelling to perfection and staked claim to being the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland\u2019s best speller in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(*) <\/strong><em>a roundish summer squash having a scalloped edge<\/em> {Merriam-Webster}<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Headline inspired by baseball executive Branch Rickey and author Paul M.
