{"id":13085,"date":"2022-03-01T15:27:17","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T20:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=13085"},"modified":"2022-03-12T14:42:24","modified_gmt":"2022-03-12T19:42:24","slug":"troon-makes-the-day-for-the-maroon-gray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/troon-makes-the-day-for-the-maroon-gray\/","title":{"rendered":"Troon makes the day for the maroon &#038; gray"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"616\" height=\"378\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/DSC_6169e-TROON-DR-A-w-students-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13094\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/DSC_6169e-TROON-DR-A-w-students-web.jpg 616w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/DSC_6169e-TROON-DR-A-w-students-web-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another high-profile golf industry partner has stepped forward to support the University of Maryland Eastern Shore\u2019s hospitality and tourism management program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Troon, a leading international golf course and resort management company, announced a Black History Month initiative to help underrepresented hospitality and professional golf management majors defray college expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Troon Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program committed to investing $75,000 over the next three years to underwrite scholarships and make internships available to UMES students at more than 625 Troon-managed properties around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy working with the partners at Troon \u2026 the students will expand that particular network that they have to be worldwide and not just nationwide,\u201d UMES President Heidi M. Anderson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES\u2019 golf management program is under the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and undergraduates take courses that prepare them for careers at resorts that likely feature hotels and restaurants as well as golf courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe mission of this program \u2026 is to obviously help raise the number of African American members in the PGA of America and this is certainly a stepping stone that\u2019s going to help us with deserving students,\u201d said Billy Dillon, program director and an associate professor of golf management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES is the nation\u2019s lone historically Black institution accredited by the PGA of America, which means that in addition to earning a bachelor\u2019s degree, graduates also must pass a \u201cplaying ability test\u201d to gain membership in the PGA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university was assisted in connecting with Troon by a citizens\u2019 advisory panel of UMES supporters and golfing enthusiasts called the Golf Development Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/DSC_6202e-TROON-D-Cooper-Dillon-Frazier-Langston-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13095\" width=\"405\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/DSC_6202e-TROON-D-Cooper-Dillon-Frazier-Langston-web.jpg 447w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/03\/DSC_6202e-TROON-D-Cooper-Dillon-Frazier-Langston-web-300x263.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><figcaption><strong>PGA golf management alums Demarkis Cooper (l) <\/strong><br><strong>&amp; Langston Frazier with program director Billy Dillon<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday, we need growth, we need the opportunities, but more importantly we need to make sure we support our students here at UMES,\u201d council member Billy Allen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthony G. Stepney, the council\u2019s chairman and a PGA Master Professional Senior Advisor, said \u201cthere is no doubt \u2026 this scholarship will make a difference for our students and ultimately the hospitality industry as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES athletics director Keith Davidson said \u201cthe generosity of Troon will go to directly help the mission of our Professional Golf Management Program and that is to produce a diverse and talented group of professionals in the golf industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI also want to thank Troon, the Development Council here at Maryland Eastern Shore and President Anderson for her trust in me to help steer this initiative that helps lay the foundation for future golf partnerships that will create jobs and opportunities for our students,\u201d Davidson said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another high-profile golf industry partner has stepped forward to support the University of Maryland Eastern Shore\u2019s hospitality and tourism management program.
