{"id":12899,"date":"2021-12-17T15:42:16","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T19:42:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=12899"},"modified":"2021-12-22T13:39:01","modified_gmt":"2021-12-22T17:39:01","slug":"umes-celebrates-a-rare-double-commencement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/umes-celebrates-a-rare-double-commencement\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES celebrates a rare double commencement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">University of Maryland Eastern Shore seniors who endured a revised, recalibrated and rebranded undergraduate experience under the pall of a persistent global pandemic completed that arduous journey today with a time-honored rite of passage \u2013 commencement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A limited number of tickets were distributed, those who entered the Hytche Athletic Center had to confirm they were vaccinated and everyone was required to wear a mask. Outside, the unseasonably warm 67 degrees made the day feel more like spring graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Graduates were joined by a handful of alumni from the class of 2020. President Heidi M. Anderson invited them to the Hytche Athletic Center to be recognized in person as well for their accomplishments that initially were celebrated a year ago in a recorded virtual ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Ciani-Wells-web-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12903\" width=\"399\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Ciani-Wells-web-1.jpg 450w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Ciani-Wells-web-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Ciani-Wells-web-1-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><figcaption>Ciani Wells<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the 179 students who completed their degree work this fall was Ciani C. Wells, an English major from Philadelphia with a 4.0 grade point average. \u00a0Wells successfully auditioned to deliver\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AIBZtcFhJaE&amp;t=1258s\">the student commentary<\/a>, another highlight on her resume that shows she earned her degree in 3\u00bd years and has designs on going to law school next fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe stand here transformed into accomplished and sophisticated young adults ready to face the world head on,\u201d Wells assured her classmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday, we are more knowledgeable \u2026 we have more courage \u2026 we feel more confident,\u201d she said. \u201cToday, we are more certain of our passion &#8230;&nbsp; we have more experience under our belts \u2026 we are more comfortable with sharing our talents and our gifts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday,\u201d she said, \u201cwe are more aware than ever of our individual greatness and our ability to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Jordan-Kelly-IMG_1373-c-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12904\" width=\"141\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Jordan-Kelly-IMG_1373-c-1.jpg 350w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Jordan-Kelly-IMG_1373-c-1-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 141px) 100vw, 141px\" \/><figcaption>Jordan L. Kelly<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jordan L. Kelly <\/strong>of Bridgeton, N.J. also graduated a semester early, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in rehabilitation psychology with a minor in psychology. While at UMES, she played softball and tennis. After graduation, she plans to pursue special education citing her work experience with young children (toddlers) and the importance of that work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing at UMES taught me to get out of my comfort zone and helped me to be more independent,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cIt allowed me to have new experiences and be more open minded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kenny R. Davis Jr<\/strong>. earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering with honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Kenny-R.-Davis-Jr.-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12905\" width=\"158\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Kenny-R.-Davis-Jr.-web.jpg 350w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Kenny-R.-Davis-Jr.-web-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><figcaption>Kenny Davis Jr.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davis grew up in Parsonsburg, Md. just east of Salisbury, a small, tight-knit farming community.&nbsp; He\u2019s the first in his immediate family to earn a college degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When not attending class or studying, Davis said he worked a series of jobs to put himself through school \u2013 sometimes putting in more than 20 hours a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He and two classmates, Landon Bickle and Fabian M. Wilson, spent the fall semester designing and building an underwater drone as a capstone project. The trio captured its performance in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=38gUhN5htIE&amp;t=127s\"><strong>this three-minute video<\/strong><\/a> taken at a local swimming pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davis had internships the past three summers at Wallops, including one where he was entrusted with ensuring flight hardware was ready for launch \u2013 in other words, he said he was the last person to \u201ctighten some bolts before a payload flew into space on an Atlas 5 rocket.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/M-Ko-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12906\" width=\"157\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/M-Ko-web.jpg 350w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/M-Ko-web-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 157px) 100vw, 157px\" \/><figcaption>Tina Ko<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When<strong> Tina Ko<\/strong> of Cockeysville, Md. walked across the Hytche center stage to receive her aviation science degree (specialization \u2013 management), she fulfilled a dream inspired by her uncle \u2013 and mentor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ko immigrated to this country from Korea at age 12 and credits her uncle \u2013 a professional pilot \u2013 with instilled in her that she should do what she dreamed of doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She enrolled in UMES in 2019 as a transfer student uncertain if she had what was needed to earn a bachelor\u2019s degree.&nbsp; She credits UMES\u2019 aviation science faculty \u2013 singling out Dr. Willie Brown \u2013 for the hands-on support that helped her reach her goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ko worked in a student fellowship capacity for NASA at the Wallops Flight Facility, where she participated in environmental research into challenges confronting the ozone, the earth\u2019s protective layer of atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has accepted a job offer from Korean Airlines and will be moving to Atlanta in early 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Jordan-HG-White-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12910\" width=\"167\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Jordan-HG-White-web.jpg 350w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/12\/Jordan-HG-White-web-269x300.jpg 269w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><figcaption>Jordan White<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jordan White<\/strong> of Baltimore received his degree in exercise science with a specialization in clinical studies. The Richard A. Henson Honors program participant is hoping that experience might translate into work in the sports medicine field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White said he was surprised by how much he came to appreciate UMES in rural Somerset County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI couldn&#8217;t see myself carrying out my undergrad career anywhere else,\u201d he said. \u201cI&#8217;ve built life-long relationships here and I have endless memories wild and funny stories that lie on this campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis was the driving force that kept me here,\u201d White said, adding \u201cI learned college is what you make it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samantha Hernandez, a 2020 graduate with honors in exercise science, was among alumni who took Dr. Anderson up on the invitation to return for an in-person ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI felt like there was some missing (a year ago) after working so hard, so this was a way to make up for that,\u201d said Hernandez, who took a day off as a technician in an orthopedic surgeon\u2019s practice.
