{"id":1282,"date":"2021-06-23T16:30:53","date_gmt":"2021-06-23T20:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=1282"},"modified":"2024-01-10T11:03:44","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T16:03:44","slug":"umes-secures-a-closing-the-gap-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/umes-secures-a-closing-the-gap-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES secures a \u201cClosing the Gap\u201d grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"402\" height=\"505\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/01\/Bridgett-Clinton-Scott-2021-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/01\/Bridgett-Clinton-Scott-2021-web.jpg 402w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/01\/Bridgett-Clinton-Scott-2021-web-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Dr. Bridgett Clinton-Scott encourages aspiring fashionistas in her human ecology classes to think big, so she&#8217;s stitched together a network to connect them with successful UMES alumni.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinton-Scott&#8217;s efforts just got a significant financial boost &#8212; a $50,000 grant from a consortium of American apparel companies looking to support historically black institutions that nurture future fashion designers and merchandisers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Maryland Eastern Shore was among 10 HBCUs picked to receive a \u201cClosing the Gap\u201d award, a collaboration between Gap Inc., Harlem&#8217;s Fashion Row (HFR), an agency for underrepresented African American and Latino designers, and Icon360, HFR&#8217;s non-profit subsidiary.&nbsp; The 10 institutions will share $510,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was very excited and surprised they reached out so soon,\u201d Clinton-Scott said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She learned about the competition May 21, and pivoted quickly to submit a plan explaining how UMES would use the money to benefit students. She received word in early June that the proposal had been accepted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A website post promoting the competition said \u201cICON360 and Gap Inc. have partnered to &#8216;Bridge the Gap&#8217; between HBCUs, funding and the next generation of fashion leaders\u201d with the goal of encouraging Black students \u201cto innovate and push the needle forward in the world of fashion.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four years ago, Clinton-Scott started connecting undergraduates with UMES alumni, mostly through virtual platforms that became even more important during the low ebb of the pandemic. Three of Clinton-Scott&#8217;s former students operate their own fashion design companies.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"428\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/06\/Delacey-Crump_Bridgett-Clinton-Scott-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/06\/Delacey-Crump_Bridgett-Clinton-Scott-web.jpg 428w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/06\/Delacey-Crump_Bridgett-Clinton-Scott-web-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had been working on creating an alumni network that I could call upon to do seminars with students,\u201d Clinton-Scott said. \u201cSo this (competition) seemed like a way I could make it more effective.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to expand upon that &#8211; expand mentorship and develop a program where our students can maintain a relationship with our fashion alumni,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When travel restrictions ease, Clinton-Scott is looking to organize a cross-country trip for students to visit UMES alumni who have found success working in the fashion industry on the West Coast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s important for our students to see for themselves \u2026 you can be successful (as a UMES alumnus),\u201d said Clinton-Scott, who joined the university&#8217;s faculty in 2004.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also is looking to invest some of the award in refreshing the \u201cPresident&#8217;s Closet,\u201d an extracurricular fashion merchandising project where students can find apparel for job interviews.&nbsp; It currently operates on a limited schedule on the second floor of Kiah Hall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a practical, hands-on experience for our students to learn about merchandising, and working in retail,\u201d she said. \u201cI&#8217;d like to get it a little more exposure.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brandice Daniel, founder and CEO of Harlem&#8217;s Fashion Row, expressed hope the \u201cClosing the Gap\u201d program will be an annual competition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are coming together as one to not only address pipeline issues of diversity and inclusion in the industry, but also to help give them tools and guidance the next generation needs to take the fashion industry to new heights,&#8221; Daniel said in a press release announcing the winners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gap Inc. and HFR subsidiary ICON360 also plan to \u201cpartner to provide mentorship and internship opportunities to students currently enrolled in each of the winning HBCU programs.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I look forward to working with Harlem&#8217;s Fashion Row to not only support the rich, storied history of HBCUs, but to change our industry for the better through cultivating pipelines to careers in fashion for Black creative talent,&#8221; said Sarah Holme, executive vice president of product design and development at Old Navy and executive sponsor of the cross-brand creative community across Gap Inc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2021 &#8220;Closing the Gap&#8221;
