{"id":12416,"date":"2021-09-17T19:49:23","date_gmt":"2021-09-17T23:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=12416"},"modified":"2021-10-07T13:27:04","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T17:27:04","slug":"umes-salutes-a-foundational-faculty-member","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/umes-salutes-a-foundational-faculty-member\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES salutes a foundational faculty member"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Strickland-and-Estep-montage-web.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Strickland-and-Estep-montage-web.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Strickland-and-Estep-montage-web-300x215.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seminar room 1106 in the University of Maryland Eastern Shore&#8217;s Food Sciences &amp; Technology Center has a new name; university officials dedicated it Thursday to the late John Valentine Strickland.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The informal ceremony was organized as a Founders&#8217; Week event to acknowledge the contributions of a respected poultry science professor who taught and conducted research at UMES in the mid-20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis recognition is made possible by a generous gift from Dr. Roger Estep, D.V.M., an esteemed university alumnus, 1951, and prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Mr. Strickland,\u201d reads the plaque that will hang in the hallway.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not the first time Estep has acknowledged his admiration for Strickland publicly.&nbsp; In 2005, Estep donated $25,000 to endow a scholarship in agriculture he asked be named for Strickland, who was born in Little Rock, Ark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wanted to honor my mentor,\u201d Estep said at the time. \u201cHe left an indelible mark upon my consciousness and character.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Estep has been among his generation&#8217;s most loyal alumni, and it&#8217;s not the first time he&#8217;s stepped up with a gift to support the university.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another generous donation inspired the university to thank him by naming a Hazel Hall conference room for the School of Agriculture and Natural Sciences after Estep&#8217;s wife, Romaine, who died in 2004.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strickland&#8217;s teaching career in Princess Anne spanned nearly three decades and as many name changes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He joined the Princess Anne College faculty in 1938 before moving on in 1940 to Lincoln University of Missouri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Strickland-group-web.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Strickland-group-web.jpeg 450w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Strickland-group-web-300x142.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Food science graduate students &amp; faculty participated in the ceremony<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President John T. Williams, looking to build a top-flight faculty around its traditional land-grant mission, lured Strickland back to Princess Anne in 1948 when the institution became Maryland State College. &nbsp;One of his first students in his second faculty tour was young Roger D. Estep.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strickland retired shortly after Maryland State College was renamed the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and in the spring of 1973 he was awarded faculty emeritus status.&nbsp; A private campus road on the east side of campus &#8211; not far from where he minded and studied poultry flocks &#8211; bears his name.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strickland died in 1998.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Estep dedicated the better part of his adult life trailblazing in academia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He earned a master&#8217;s degree from Pennsylvania State University and a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tuskegee Institute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like his mentor, Estep started off his career teaching \u201cpoultry husbandry\u201d at Penn State in the late 1950s before moving on to Howard University&#8217;s College of Medicine, where he taught physiology and was a research veterinarian.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He eventually moved into administration to serve as Howard&#8217;s executive assistant to the vice president for health affairs in 1970 and finally as the executive assistant to the president in 1971 before leaving for a short stint with the National Institutes of Health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1972, Estep returned to Howard, where he served nearly two decades as vice president for development and university relations, spearheading the institution&#8217;s first $100 million fund raising campaign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A long-time Washington, D.C. area resident, after retiring from Howard Estep shifted his energies to helping UMES, accepting an appointment in 2007 to be senior advisor for government relations.&nbsp; He also served on his alma mater&#8217;s fundraising advisory committee and assisted the institution in meeting its fundraising goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David Balcom, UMES&#8217; senior administrator who coordinates fund-raising and planned giving, praised Estep&#8217;s long, generous history of philanthropy in support of his alma mater.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seminar room 1106 in the University of Maryland Eastern Shore&#8217;s Food Sciences &amp; Technology Center has a new name; university officials dedicated it Thursday to the late John Valentine Strickland.&nbsp; The informal ceremony was organized as a Founders&#8217; Week event to acknowledge the contributions of a respected poultry science professor who taught and conducted research&#8230;<span class=\"cpschool-read-more-link-holder\"><a class=\"btn btn-basic cpschool-read-more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/umes-salutes-a-foundational-faculty-member\/\">Read more <span class=\"sr-only\">UMES salutes a foundational faculty member<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":12417,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_coblocks_attr":"","_coblocks_dimensions":"","_coblocks_responsive_height":"","_coblocks_accordion_ie_support":"","wds_primary_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"post_folder":[],"class_list":["post-12416","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12416","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=12416"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12416\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/12417"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=12416"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=12416"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=12416"},{"taxonomy":"post_folder","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/post_folder?post=12416"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
