Bio<\/strong>

Dr. Chang Hoon Shin is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Cell Biology from the Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences & Technology (SAIHST) at Sungkyunkwan University, where he investigated oncogenic RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and their post-transcriptional regulatory roles in cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his postdoctoral appointment at SAIHST, Dr. Shin served as the full-time recipient of a competitive government-funded NRF Basic Research Program grant, leading an independent project on hnRNPK-mediated post-transcriptional regulation in colorectal cancer. This experience helped establish his long-term research trajectory in RNA biology and cancer gene regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He later joined the National Institute on Aging (NIA\/NIH) as a Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow, contributing to multi-omics studies on cellular senescence, RNA stability, and aging-associated gene regulatory networks. Dr. Shin subsequently trained at the University of Oklahoma, where he expanded his research into metabolic reprogramming in cancer, long noncoding RNA\u2013encoded micropeptides, and viral RNA-binding proteins involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At UMES, Dr. Shin leads research on herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) latency, focusing on identifying host-derived latency regulators and dissecting how viral and host RBPs modulate latency-associated transcripts. His laboratory integrates molecular biology, RNA biochemistry, proteomics, and functional genomics to uncover post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms relevant to cancer, aging, and infectious diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Shin has authored numerous publications in journals such as Molecular and Cellular Biology, Blood, Nucleic Acids Research, Aging Cell, Experimental & Molecular Medicine, and Cell Death & Differentiation. His honors include the NIH Fellow Award for Research Excellence (2024), the RNA Society Research Presentation Fellowship (2025), and the University of Oklahoma Trainee Research Conference Award (2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
